IR night vision. Probably super dark (to them). Young people being young people.
Here's a tip: turn your cell phone camera on and scan around and IR illuminators will show as bright lights on screen, but not to your vision.
You can test this by pointing a remote control (most are IR) at the cell phone and pressing a button to activate it. You should be able to see it light up with your phone, but not your eyes.
Assuming this works, then you can spot most IR illuminators with this technique and avoid this scenario to some extent.
