In coastal metro suburb, "retailers" (not big boxes, have already boycotted them for years) are getting even worse. Work Ethic just may be a more forbidden transgression than stealing or being under the influence. What could possibly reverse this? The communists will only hire people who fit their "profiles". With most going online anyway, there are still some B&M places which need to be patronized by necessity. This shit is "normal" now and people seem to have accepted it. Even small places act as though they are bestowing the utmost privelege just ringing up a purchase. It's never been the Midwest or the South (blessed to have lived and worked in both) to begin with, but has managed to get even worse. It's people of all ages, not just the current crop/generation of young hires.
