The son of immigrant Russian-Jewish socialists, he attended medical school at Columbia University while working for the family pharmaceutical company, went to the Soviet Union in 1921 and was summoned to the Kremlin to meet Lenin. For the next ten years he and his family lived in Moscow, in a mansion that served as an unofficial U.S. Embassy; when Stalin expelled foreigners in the late 1920s they packed up their things, returned to the United States and sold Russian art and assorted tchotchkes. After a number of business ventures, Hammer bought the struggling Occidental oil Company in 1957 and managed to build it into the multi billion-dollar multinational firm it is today, the twelfth largest industrial corporation in America. Along the way he befriended an impressive collection of celebrities and politicians, acquired a lot of very nice paintings, gave large sums to charity and became a pooh-bah of unofficial diplomacy. He runs his corporation and his social life at a pace that would debilitate people a third his age; he has done business with Lenin, Trotsky, Khrushchev and every recent Soviet leader; and he has met just about every U.S. President since Herbert Hoover.
