Germany opposes Ukrainian UN proposal – FM

Annalena Baerbock says Berlin does not support Kiev’s call to strip Russia of its veto power

Germany does not agree with Ukrainian proposals to reform the UN Security Council, which include stripping Russia of its veto power, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has said.

Addressing the UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky called for the creation of a mechanism that would allow Russia’s veto power at the UN Security Council to be circumvented.

Baerbock told Germany’s ARD TV channel later the same day that “we don’t support this, and I have made it clear to my Ukrainian partners time and again.”

The diplomat noted that while Berlin sympathizes with the Ukrainian people, “it is not that we support everything that comes out of Ukraine from the government.”

The minister was similarly skeptical of Zelensky’s proposal to grant Germany permanent member status of the Security Council. She claimed that “you can’t say: ‘Okay, we are just changing the Security Council now’, that would be a little naive.”

In his speech on Wednesday, Zelensky accused Russia of violating international law and of launching “criminal and unprovoked aggression” against Ukrainian territory and resources.

The Ukrainian leader further called for reforms that would allow the 193 members of the General Assembly to suspend or strip the veto power of one of the five permanent Security Council members, which are the US, the UK, France, Russia, and China.

Discussing the prospect of peace in his country, Zelensky insisted it could only be achieved if Moscow fully withdrew its troops from territory based on Ukraine’s 1991 borders.

Also speaking at the UN General Assembly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused the West of failing to address the “root causes” of the Ukraine conflict, adding that Kiev’s backers appear to lack any “arguments for an honest dialogue” with Moscow.

The Russian diplomat described the Ukrainian government as a “blatantly Nazi regime.” He noted that Kiev had effectively stonewalled peace negotiations, with Zelensky signing a decree last October prohibiting talks with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

(Many EU nations are opposing Zelensky and Kiev, this is the end of his division and hatred. Poland cutting off arms and grain, along with others not taking their toxic grain, seems pretty biblical to me.)

EU to back members against Ukraine – FT

Kiev has filed a WTO case against Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia over their ban on Ukrainian grain imports

The EU is considering whether to defend Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia against a grievance filed by Ukraine after the three countries announced unilateral bans on the import of Ukrainian seeds and grains, the Financial Times reported on Thursday.

This summer, Brussels allowed five Eastern European nations to block importing these products for domestic sale but refused to extend the ban this month. As a result, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia imposed their own prohibitions, going against the EU policy of acting in unison on trade matters.

The three countries’ officials argued that Ukrainian agricultural imports undercut domestic prices and threatened the livelihoods of local farmers. As for the other two countries, Romania has not applied unilateral measures after the EU block was lifted, while Bulgaria imposed an embargo on sunflower seeds from Ukraine on Wednesday after days of protests by farmers.

In response, Kiev filed a dispute with the World Trade Organization. Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia later said they were withdrawing from an EU platform coordinating Ukrainian grain imports.

According to the FT, the European Commission (EC) had initially demanded that Budapest, Warsaw, and Bratislava reverse their bans, as EU member states are “not allowed to take unilateral measures on trade.”It is now reportedly working to “coordinate” its legal rebuttals to Kiev’s filing.

(Zelensky goes to the UN and WH and will walk away with nothing, no money will be sent, no support and the EU nations and the EU are blocking this Nazi creature! More proof that the end is near for Ukraine. All because he wanted their grain to be sold in these EU. And attacked Poland their biggest deliverer of arms. Kiev’s greed is boundless.)

Wagner chief’s grave under 24/7 guard – media

New measures were introduced after a violin was stolen from Evgeny Prigozhin’s resting place, according to the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper

Security measures have been stepped up at the grave of former Wagner private military company chief Evgeny Prigozhin, a cemetery worker has told the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper.

According to a report on Wednesday, a guard post and a CCTV camera have been installed after a violin was stolen from the burial site at the Prokhorovskoe cemetery in St. Petersburg.

The instrument is among the symbols of the Wagner Group, whose fighters are nicknamed ‘the Musicians’ due to the name that the PMC shares with classical German composer Richard Wagner.

A violin and a sledgehammer – another symbol of the PMC – appeared at Prigozhin’s grave a few days after his burial on August 29, the cemetery worker recalled. However, he claimed that the musical instrument, which he described as looking “pricey,” had been “snatched” the following day.

According to the worker, a cyclist was seen “racing away” from the site at the time of the incident, but the perpetrator has not been found.

“After that, a CCTV camera and a guard booth were set up at Prigozhin’s grave,” the employee revealed. “Now there’s a security guard on duty there 24/7.”

The worker said it was his understanding that the measures had been organized by Wagner members, who received approval from the cemetery’s administration.

When asked about the whereabouts of the sledgehammer, the cemetery worker replied that it was still at the grave.

Prigozhin and several other high-ranking Wagner figures were killed in a plane crash in Russia’s Tver Region on August 23. The cause of the incident is being investigated, and Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said late last month that a “deliberate atrocity” could not be ruled out.

The Wagner PMC was instrumental in the Russian capture of the strategic city of Artyomovsk (Bakhmut) from Ukrainian forces in May, making Prigozhin a household name.

However, the PMC leader launched a short-lived mutiny against the Russian military in mid-June, after which a deal was reached for him to move to Belarus. Under an agreement with the Kremlin, Wagner fighters avoided prosecution and were provided with a choice of moving to Belarus together with their leader, joining the Russian armed forces, or retiring.

(I hope Sundance is right that Prigozhin retired to an unknown country, with the $6.2 billion from the SeeEyeAye!)

No grounds for Ukraine peace talks – Kremlin

In the current circumstances, Moscow has no choice but to continue its military operation, Dmitry Peskov says

Russia is ready to seek a diplomatic solution to the conflict in Ukraine, but so far there is no basis for such talks to start, the Kremlin press secretary has said.

“The word ‘negotiations’ is being heard more and more often” in relation to the crisis in Ukraine, Dmitry Peskov said in an interview with Russia’s Channel One on Wednesday.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin“consistently… explains the position of the Russian side, which has never given up on the idea of such negotiations, but which asserts that at the moment there are no grounds for their resumption,” he explained.

According to the Kremlin spokesman, in view of the circumstances, Russia has no choice but to keep pursuing its goals in Ukraine through military means.

Moscow and Kiev have not sat down at the negotiating table since talks in Istanbul in late March 2022, a month after the outbreak of the conflict. Russia, which initially expressed optimism on the peace process, later accused Ukraine of backtracking on all progress achieved in Türkiye, saying it had lost trust in Kiev’s negotiators.

Ukrainian President Vladmir Zelensky used his trip to the UN General Assembly this week to rally international support for his so-called “peace formula.” He told world leaders in New York that his plan might provide “a real chance to end the aggression on the terms of the nation which was attacked.”

Among other things, Zelesky’s “peace formula”calls on Russia to withdraw to its pre-2014 borders, pay reparations, and submit to war crimes tribunals. Moscow rejected this plan when it was first put forward last year, describing it as “unrealistic” and a sign of Kiev’s unwillingness to seek a diplomatic solution.

US President Joe Biden stated in his speech at the UN on Tuesday that Washington supported a negotiated settlement, but stressed that Russia’s “price for peace,” which, according to him, was “Ukraine’s capitulation, Ukraine’s territory and Ukraine’s children,” was unacceptable.

During a UN Security Council meeting on Wednesday, at which Zelensky was present, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also said Moscow was “not giving up” on the idea of peace talks.

If the US is also interested in dialogue it could start by giving a “command” to Kiev to cancel a decree, signed last autumn, which banned Zelensky from holding any negotiations with Putin, the Russian diplomat suggested.

(More bad news for Kiev. It will only get harder for Kiev from here. The Kremlin will demand and get much more out of any peace talks, Col. McGregor has said. They blew it!)

Polish MP ‘bills’ Ukraine $23 billion for support

The stunt was intended as a rebuke to Kiev, which is suing Warsaw for imposing a ban on Ukrainian grain imports

A Polish MP issued a ‘bill’ for $23 billion to the Ukrainian embassy on Tuesday, suggesting that Kiev should repay the aid it has received after suing Warsaw for imposing a ban on grain imports from the country.

The politician behind the stunt was Krzysztof Bosak, whose National Movement party is part of the right-wing Confederation Liberty and Independence bloc in the Polish parliament.

The ‘bill’ listed various kinds of assistance provided directly to Kiev by the Polish government, social benefits paid to Ukrainian refugees, and private donations made by Polish nationals, as calculated by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. The total amount is likely “significantly underestimated and incomplete,” Bosak noted.

Ukraine has sued Poland before the World Trade Organization (WTO) and threatened to introduce trade restrictions in retaliation for imposing a ban on imports of Ukrainian grain. This was previously prohibited by the EU, but temporary restrictions expired earlier this month. Warsaw opted to introduce a national ban instead, insisting that it needed to protect Polish farmers from Ukrainian competition.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky apparently snubbed Poland and its fellow EU member states Hungary and Slovakia, which have similar policies, during a speech at the UN General Assembly this week. He claimed that some European nationsthat are publicly friendly to Ukraine “play out solidarity” while indirectly “helping set the stage to a Moscow actor.” (Zelensky never knows when to shutup! I thought he was intuitive and could read the signs of the crowd?)

The Polish Foreign Ministry summoned Ukrainian Ambassador Vasil Zvarich on Wednesday to protest over the “unjustified”remark. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on the same day that Warsaw would no longer send weapons to Kiev because it needed to prioritize its own military modernization.

Confederation members will compete with the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party for nationalist votes in a general election next month. The political bloc has criticized the government for cozying up to Kiev amid its armed conflict with Russia, arguing that the policy has obviously backfired.

“We need to start playing tough, like the Ukrainian oligarchs play, who are represented by Ukrainian politicians,” Bosak said at a press conference.

Meanwhile, Brussels is reportedly considering taking the side of the EU member states in the WTO case. The European Commission is seeking to “coordinate” the three nations’ legal rebuttals to the suit, according to a letter cited by the Financial Times on Thursday, despite initially demanding a reversal of the grain bans.

(Duda wasn’t kidding when he said “cut free the drowning man otherwise he will take us all down! Kek)

Ukraine suspends death-threat transgender military spokesperson

Sarah Ashton-Cirillo’s promise to “hunt down” Russian “propagandists” caused outrage among US conservatives

The Ukrainian Territorial Defense Forces has fired its transender American spokesperson for threatening a wave of assassinations against “Kremlin propagandists” around the world. Sarah Ashton-Cirillo’s dramatic threat drew the attention of US Senator JD Vance, who asked the administration of President Joe Biden to explain if it was funding this content.

“The statements of [Junior Sergeant] Ashton-Cirillo in recent days were not approved by the command of the [Territorial Defense Forces] or the command of the [Armed Forces of Ukraine],” the Ukrainian Territorial Defense Forces said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday.

“Sergeant Sarah Ashton-Cirillo will be suspended immediately,” the statement continued, adding that an official investigation would be launched into Ashton-Cirillo’s conduct.

Ashton-Cirillo is a biological man who worked as a Democratic Party activist in the US before moving to Ukraine following the start of Russia’s military operation last year. He/she was hired as the Territorial Defense Forces’ English-language spokesperson in August, a decision that critics say was intended to curry favor with pro-LGBTQ Western audiences.

Last week, Ashton-Cirillo warned that “a favorite Kremlin propagandist” would “pay for their crimes,” before declaring that “Russia’s war criminal propagandists will all be hunted down, and justice will be served.” Ashton-Cirillo did not name any specific targets or detail what manner of “justice” would be meted out.

The bizarre tirade drew condemnation from Moscow, and was publicized in the US by conservative pundit Jack Posobiec. After tweeting about Ashton-Cirillo’s video, Posobiec was added to Ukraine’s notorious ‘Mirotvorets’ kill list.

RepublicanSenator JD Vancetook notice of the video last Friday, and wrote a letter to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, and Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, asking the three officials to explainwhether Ashton-Cirillo was being “compensated with US resources,”or previously worked for US intelligence.

“I worry American resources could be supporting violence or the threat of violence against people for speaking their mind,” Vance wrote, pointing out that “any critic of America’s incoherent policy in Ukraine has been slandered as a propagandist, including multiple presidential candidates and American journalists.”

Ashton-Cirillo responded on Monday, stating: “I only answer to three groups of people: my Ukrainian commanders, the Ukrainian people, and the American taxpayer.”

In its statement on Wednesday, the Territorial Defense Forces said that “the defense forces of Ukraine strictly observe the norms of international humanitarian law.” However, Moscow has accused Kiev of orchestrating the murders of journalist Darya Dugina in August 2022 and of military blogger Vladlen Tatarsky in April this year. In July, the Federal Security Service said that it foiled a Ukrainian plot to assassinate RT Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan and journalist Ksenia Sobchak.

(Quite a lot or rebukes of Zelensky & Kiev in the last three days, is the SeeEyeAye allowing Kiev to be an anathema now?)

Russia issues warning over NATO war games

The Western alliance is preparing for “a confrontation” with Moscow, a senior diplomat has said

Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksandr Grushko has accused NATO of rehearsing for a military conflict with Moscow, as the US-led bloc plans its largest joint exercise since the Cold War.

“These provocative exercises are clearly aggressive,” the diplomat said on Wednesday, arguing that the maneuvers planned for in 2024 are “an attempt at military-political pressure.”

“The scenario [of the drill] was formulated in such a way that it leaves no doubt that it is part of preparations for a military confrontation with Russia,” Grushko said. “It is yet another deliberate step towards destabilization of the situation in the north of Europe.” He added that Moscow would do everything necessary to ensure the security of its borders.

Grushko’s statement came after NATO announced that next year’s Steadfast Defender exercises would be the largest joint exercise the alliance has conducted since the Cold War. The war games involving more than 40,000 troops will be held in Germany, Poland and the Baltic states, Admiral Rob Bauer, chair of the NATO Military Committee, said on Saturday. “A new era of collective defense is upon us,” Bauer told reporters in Oslo, Norway.

According to the Financial Times, the drill revolves around a fight against a fictitious enemy “modeled on a coalition led by Russia, named Ocassus.” For the first time, the exercise would use real-world geography to “create more realistic scenarios for the troops,”FT reported.

General Eirik Kristoffersen, Norway’s Chief of Defense, said that one of the elements of Steadfast Defender is an exercise dubbed Nordic Response, “the biggest” ever to be held by the Nordic countries.

NATO has increased the scale and scope of its exercises since 2014, after Crimea voted to leave Ukraine and join Russia in the wake of the Western-backed coup in Kiev that year. Moscow views NATO’s continuing expansion eastward as a threat and has cited the bloc’s cooperation with Kiev as one of the reasons for its military operation in Ukraine, which was launched in February 2022.

Russian officials have further warned that deliveries of heavy weapons to Ukraine were making NATO members de facto parties to the conflict.

Speaking at the UN Security Council on Wednesday, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused the West of “eroding global stability”and stirring tensions.“The risks of a global conflict are growing,” the minister said, as he slammed NATO members for discarding efforts to bring about a peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in favor of belligerent rhetoric.

(The cutting off of Zelensky and Kiev is directly related to NATO and UN realizing Russia will fight and other BRICS country may back Russia, and they are coming too close to WWIII for a Shithole country)

Ukraine using ‘Soviet’ methods against media – Bild

Kiev recently condemned the New York Times for suggesting a Ukrainian missile had killed civilians at a Donbass market

Ukraine is resorting to “Soviet methods” to deal with unfavorable media coverage, Bild deputy editor-in-chief Paul Ronzheimer has claimed. He criticized Kiev’s recent attack on the New York Times as unjustifiable.

Contradicting claims by the Ukrainian authorities and other Western media, the US newspaper suggested earlier this week that a Ukrainian missile, rather than a Russian one, had killed at least 15 civilians at a market in Donbass earlier this month.

Those claims drew condemnation from Ukrainian officials, including senior presidential aide Mikhail Podoliak, who accused the NYT of promoting “conspiracy theories.”

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Ronzheimer described Kiev’s reaction to the report as “absolutely unacceptable.”

“That the government and military are now accusing NYT reporters of [spreading] ‘propaganda’ and ‘fake[s],’ more or less openly threatening with the revocation of accreditation because they make notes and analyze what is what, reminds [me] of Soviet methods and should have no place in Ukraine,” the German journalist wrote.

Ronzheimer argued that gagging the media “has nothing to do with European or Western standards that Ukraine otherwise prides itself on.” He called for Kiev to respect the freedom of the press, even if the authorities are uncomfortable with what is reported.(Why isn’t the “Press” criticizing Kiev for shutting down all free “Press” last year? That should be their next target!)

In an article on Monday, the NYT published the results of its investigation into the attack on a market in the Kiev-controlled city of Konstantinovka on September 6, which claimed the lives of at least 15 civilians and left scores more injured. The newspaper claimed that evidence pointed to a “tragic mishap” involving a Ukrainian anti-air Buk missile that had apparently veered off course.

The media outlet said it had analyzed missile fragments, satellite imagery, witness accounts, and social media posts. Reporters noted that the Ukrainian authorities had tried to prevent them from accessing the impact site.

Even figures generally critical of Russia’s actions in Ukraine, including Bild journalist Julian Ropcke and the open-source intelligence analysis group CIT, had also suggested that Kiev was responsible shortly after the incident.

However, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky was quick to point the finger at Moscow over the strike, while senior aide Podoliak dismissed any other scenario as “ridiculous.”

Commenting on the NYT report on Tuesday, Podoliak wrote on X: “No doubt, the appearance of articles in foreign media with doubts about Russia’s involvement in the attack on Konstantinovka entail the growth of conspiracy theories.”

(I knew the day the NYTs published the article of Ukraine being responsible for this, that the media got orders to go sour of Kiev, Zelensky and the leaders there. And this from Bild is another example the media WW got the message.)

The high likelihood is that once the Ukrainian “counteroffensive” peters out in another few weeks as a massive failure, Russian forces may launch a large-scale offensive. Conceivably, Russian forces may even cross the Dnieper River and take control of Odessa and the coastline leading to the Romanian border, from where NATO has been mounting attacks on Crimea. Make no mistake, for the Anglo-American axis, encircling Russia in the Black Sea has always been a top priority.

The ‘Biden Phase’ of the Ukraine War

1/2Sept 18, 2023

Zelensky’s visit to the White House this week comes at a defining moment, writes M.K. Bhadrakumar, as the war in Ukraine has intertwined with the problems of the Korean Peninsula and Taiwan.

By M.K. Bhadrakumar

Indian Punchline

The ground war in Ukraine has run its course, a new phase is beginning. Even diehard supporters of Ukraine in the Western media and think tanks are admitting that a military victory over Russia is impossible and a vacation of the territory under Russian control is way beyond Kiev’s capability.

Hence the ingenuity of the Biden administration in exploring Plan B — counseling Kiev to be realistic about loss of territory and pragmatically seek dialogue with Moscow. This was the bitter message that U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken transmitted to Kiev recently in person.

But President Volodymyr’s Zelensky’s caustic reaction in a subsequent interview with the Economist magazine is revealing. He hit back that the Western leaders still talk the good talk, pledging they will stand with Ukraine “as long as it takes” (Biden mantra), but he, Zelensky, has detected a change of mood among some of his partners:

“I have this intuition, reading, hearing and seeing their eyes [when they say] ‘we’ll be always with you.’ But I see that he or she is not here, not with us.”

Certainly, Zelensky is reading the body language right, as in the absence of an overwhelming military success shortly, western support for Ukraine is time-limited.

Zelensky knows that sustaining Western support will be difficult. Yet he hopes that if not Americans, the European Union will at least keep supplying aid and may be open to negotiations over the accession process for Ukraine possibly even at its summit in December.

He also held out a veiled terrorist threat to Europe — warning that it would not be a “good story” for Europe if it were to “drive these people [of Ukraine] into a corner.” So far such ominous threats were muted, originating from low ranking activists of the fascist Banderite fringe.

But Europe has its limits, too. Western stockpiles of weapons are exhausted and Ukraine is a bottomless pit. Importantly, conviction is lacking whether continued supplies would make any difference to the proxy war that is unwinnable. Besides, European economies are in the doldrums. The recession in Germany may slide into depression, with profound consequences of “deindustrialisation.”

Suffice it to say, Zelensky’s visit to the White House in the coming days becomes a defining moment. The Biden Administration is in a sombre mood that the proxy war is hindering a full-throttle Indo-Pacific strategy against China. Yet, during an appearance on ABC’s This Week,Blinken explicitly stated for the first time that the U.S. would not oppose Ukraine using U.S.-supplied longer-range missiles to attack deep inside Russian territory, a move that Moscow has previously called a “red line,” which would make Washington a direct party to the conflict.

The well-known American military historian, strategic thinker and combat veteran, retired Col. Douglas MacGregor (who served as adviser to the Pentagon during the Trump administration), is prescient when he says that a new “Biden phase of the war” is about to begin. That is to say, having run out of ground forces, the locus will now shift to long-range strike weapons such as the Storm Shadow, Taurus and ATACMS long-range missiles.

US Long-Range Missiles

The U.S. is considering sending ATACMS long-range missiles that Ukraine has been asking for a long time with the capability to strike deep inside Russian territory. The most provocative part is that NATO reconnaissance platforms, both manned and unmanned, will be used in such operations, making the U.S. a virtual co-belligerent.

Russia has been exercising restraint in attacking the source of such enemy capabilities but how long such restraint will continue is anybody’s guess.

In response to a pointed query about how Washington would see the attacks on Russian territory with American weaponry and technology, Blinken argued that the increasing number of attacks on Russian territory by Ukrainian drones are

“about how they’re [Ukrainians] going to defend their territory and how they’re working to take back what’s been seized from them. Our [U.S. ] role, the role of dozens of other countries around the world that are supporting them, is to help them do that.” …

Russia is not going to accept such a brazen escalation, especially as these advanced weapon systems used to attack Russia are actually manned by NATO personnel — contractors, trained ex-military hands or even serving officers.

Russian President Vladimir Putin told the media on Friday that “we have detected foreign mercenaries and instructorsboth on the battlefield and in the units where training is carried out. I think yesterday or the day before yesterday someone was captured again.”

TheU.S. calculus is that at some point, Russia will be compelled to negotiateand a frozen conflict will ensue where NATO allies would retain the option to continue with Ukraine’s military build-up and the process leading to its membership of the Atlantic alliance, and allow the Biden administration to focus on the Indo-Pacific.

However, Russia will not settle for a “frozen conflict” that falls far short of the objectives ofdemilitarisation and denazification of Ukrainethat are the key objectives of its special military operation.

Faced with this new phase of the proxy war, the form that the Russian retaliation takes remains to be seen. There could be multiple ways without Russia directly attacking NATO territories or using nuclear weapons (unless the U.S. stages a nuclear attack — of which the chances are zero as of now.)

Already, it is possible to see the potential resumption of military-technical cooperation between Russia and the DPRK [North Korea]. That could potentially include ICBM technology. And it would be a natural consequence of the aggressive U.S. policy towards Russia and its support for Ukraine — as much as of the current international situation.

The point is, today it is with DPRK; tomorrow it could be with Iran, Cuba or Venezuela — what Col. MacGregor calls “horizontal escalation” by Moscow. The situation in Ukraine has become interconnected with the problems of the Korean Peninsula and Taiwan.

Russian Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu said on state television last week that Russia has “no other options” but to achieve a victory in its special military operation and will continue to make progress withthe key mission of mowing down the enemy’s equipment and personnel. This suggests that the attritional war will be further intensified while the overall strategy may shift to achieving total military victory.

The Ukrainian military is desperate for manpower. In the 15-week “counteroffensive” alone, over 71,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed. There is talk of Kiev seeking repatriation of its nationals of military age from among the refugees in Europe. On the other hand, in expectation of a prolonged conflict, the mobilisation in Russia is continuing.

Putin disclosed on Friday that 300,000 people have volunteered and signed contracts to join the armed forces and new units are being formed, equipped with advanced types of weapons and equipment, “and some of them are already 85–90 percent equipped.”

The high likelihood is that once the Ukrainian “counteroffensive” peters out in another few weeks as a massive failure, Russian forces may launch a large-scale offensive.Conceivably, Russian forces may even cross the Dnieper Riverand take control of Odessa and the coastline leading to the Romanian border, from where NATO has been mounting attacks on Crimea. Make no mistake, for the Anglo-American axis, encircling Russia in the Black Sea has always been a top priority.

JOHN KIRIAKOU: Animal-Grade Prison Food Indicts US Society

September 18, 2023

By John Kiriakou

I’ve written in the past about an awful experience I had in prison a decade ago while serving 23 months in prison after blowing the whistle on the CIA’s torture program. I was doing my time at the Federal Correctional Institution at Loretto, Pennsylvania, a low-security prison in the Appalachian Mountains. One of the very first things I found, on my very first day, was that the food was bad. Very bad…

I arrived in prison on a Thursday. The next day, Friday, was “fish day.” A fellow prisoner warned me to skip the fish. “We call it sewer trout,” he said. “you don’t want to put that in your body.” Product of China. Not for human consumption. FEED USE ONLY.” That’s what the servers were slopping onto our trays. Things only got worse from there….

I later read in Prison Legal News magazine that the company was fined and the BOP kept the money. But the real shame here isn’t even that we ate dog food. The real shame is that we didn’t even realize that it was dog food because the food is so bad every day. I can’t tell you how many expired foods we were served, still in the packaging, and how many years-old frozen bagels, dyed green for some previous St. Patrick’s Day, we were served every Sunday for a year.

Diet Leaves Prisoner’s Legs and Feet Swollen

A new study by Impact Justice has found that this level of food quality is consistent in federal, state, and local prisons across America. The report says that,

“Like every other aspect of life in prison, the food is dreary and monotonous and, with rare exceptions, relentlessly bad: two slimy pieces of bologna sandwiched between flimsy slices of white bread, a packet of mustard, and a handful of potato chips one day; two boiled hot dogs, the same white bread, and a scoop of under-baked beans the next. There are concoctions too similar to differentiate, in which chunks of mystery meat swim in a dull gravy, sometimes atop mushy white rice, or a clump of pasta with the same watery tomato sauce week after week.”

In 2019, prisoners in Nevada complained to state officials that the food they were being served was unhealthy, of poor quality, highly-processed, and too high in fat and sodium. The state’s response was to cut portion sizes. Last week, with prisoners quite literally starving from the meager portions, a local newspaper reported thatmany prisoners were eating toothpaste, salt, and even wet toilet paper to try to stave off the hunger.

A former prisoner told the paper when he was released from a Nevada minimum-security work camp that a doctor told him that his legs and feet were swollen because of the poor diet that he had for the six years that he was imprisoned. What he was given may have met state standards for “nutrition,” but maybe the problem is with the state standards.

When the newspaper first brought the issue to public attention last week, a spokesman for the Nevada state Department of Corrections said,

“There’s a diet. It may not be what we want, but a dietician reviews is, saying that it’s the vitamins and requirements, at a minimum, that you need.”

I wonder if he knows about the dog food or the Chinese “Alaskan” cod animal feed. I wonder if his legs and feet are swollen or if he’s malnourished.

New Bureau of Prisons Director ‘Wants to Do Right Thing’

I had occasion last week to have dinner with another former federal prisoner. He said that he had tweeted so regularly about the poor conditions in American prisons that the federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) finally asked him to come on as a paid advisor. One of the first issues he raised was that of food quality. He told me that the new director of the BOP, Collette Peters, genuinely wanted to do the right thing.

He said her tenure as head of the Oregon Department of Corrections was successful and that she implemented positive changes there. But he went on to say that Peters is up against an entrenched bureaucracy at the BOP. It’s a bureaucracy that sees her as an outsider trying to push career BOP officials aside. They’re doing whatever they can to block her reforms, waiting until she finally resigns or is fired, so they can then go back to business as usual.

That means that the rest of us have to keep up the fight. Outrage is motivating. We shouldn’t be proud that prison food in some of the worst countries in the world is better than what we have here. We’re supposed to be the greatest country in the world, right? We have to fight it. Either Mahatma Gandhi or former Vice President Hubert Humphrey, depending on what source you use, said,“The measure of a society is how it treats its weakest members.”The prison system, and prison food, certainly indict our society.

Typical CIA move, “we are on your side now”. Where were you years ago since you’ve known so long?

If he lays down and and professes he supports Trump now, I wouldn’t trust cretins like him
