Russia is going to continue "having enemy status" whether we are nice to them or not. In the absence of opposition, every country is a power-seeking expansionist. Russia is very good at it and has invaded another country just a few years ago. They are merely a lesser threat today than Islam.
It would put a lot of minds at ease if Trump were to say something like "if Russia tries to do something bad I want to know about it" to keep up morale in the spook corps.
