What Does the United States Stand For?
Thinking beyond the flags and fireworks that will mark the Fourth of July. (veiled threat? Maybe?)
No Names "recommended" reading from his twat acct. He's got a "plug in" but here's the LEAD IN from NYT:
"Because America is an idea as much as a country, our acts of moral courage defend us as surely as any act of violence, writes Phil Klay, a former Marine who served in Iraq.
Then, McCain's take:
“In the real world, as lived and experienced by real people, the demand for human rights and dignity, the longing for liberty and justice and opportunity, the hatred of oppression and corruption and cruelty is reality. By denying this experience, we deny the aspirations of billions of people, and invite their enduring resentment,” the Republican senator writes.
(pssst….LITTLE LATE NO NAME)
And of course, wouldn't be COMPLETE without the input of one of its editors:
From Brent Staples, who serves on the editorial board: “Many of us who were born black in the 1950s abandoned reverence toward the national anthem once we were old enough to grasp what Martin Luther King Jr. meant when he said that the country had defaulted on the promises embodied in the Declaration of Independence.”
THAT^^^^ explains a lot.
