The director, Todd Phillips, although a Jew, encapsulated the plight of the son that grew up with a single mom. Todd grew up with a single mother himself in New York. Only someone with the perspective of growing up with a single mother, can fully understand the Joker.
Phoenix is an amazing actor though, I dunno how he channeled the epitome of the character so flawlessly even though he grew up in a fairly large family.
