âAll Of Sony Systemsâ Allegedly Hacked By New Ransomware Group

Thereâs a new gang on the dark web that claims itâs breached all of Sonyâs systems in a ransomware attack.
According to a September 25 article from Australian cybersecurity publication Cyber Security Connect, the PlayStation maker was cracked open by Ransomed.vc, a new outfit of hackers thatâs only been operating since Septemberâthough the publication suggests the gang has connections to previous dark web forums and groups. Cyber Security Connect reports that the hack allegedly unearthed screenshots of Sonyâs internal log-in page, an internal PowerPoint presentation outlining test bench details, several Java files, and a document tree of the entire leak housing 6,000 files.
âWe have successfully [compromised] all of [Sonyâs] systems,â Ransomed.vc proclaimed. âWe wonât ransom them! We will sell the data. Due to Sony not wanting to pay. DATA IS FOR SALE. WE ARE SELLING IT.â
Within those 6,000 files are supposedly a bevy of documentation, including unknown âbuild log files,â a swath of Java resources, and HTML data. Many of the files are reportedly in Japanese. While Ransomed.vc hasnât listed a price for the data, the group left contact details for Sony to get in touch and listed a âpost dateâ of September 28, which might be when Ransomed.vc will just post it all.
Interestingly, Ransomed.vc seems to be a ransomware operator and a ransomware-as-a-service organization. That means that alongside these large-scale hacks of major corporations, Ransomed.vc (which VGC claims operates out of Russia and Ukraine) also reportedly works with the EUâs general data protection and regulation (GDPR) and other data privacy laws to report vulnerabilities in company systems and violations in the laws. According to Cyber Security Connect, the group is leveraging laws to reportedly bully victims into submission.
Sony has not publicly commented on the breach or the nature of Ransomed.vcâs impact on the company just yet. Kotaku reached out to Sony for a statement.
This isnât the first time Sony has been hacked. Back in 2011, the companyâs PlayStation Network suffered a massive breach that saw some 77 million registered accounts compromised and online features totally inoperable. It was so bad that Sony not only had to explain to Congress what happened but also began giving away games and money a few years later as compensation. Less than 6,000 files may not seem as egregious as that PSN hack, but a hack is a hack all the same, so hereâs hoping Sony can batten down the hatches ASAP.

Mayor Adams debuts 420-pound NYPD robot assigned to patrol NYC subway stations

New York City unveiled a new robot designed to help the nation's largest police force keep riders safe in the subways.
Knightscope K5 Security Robot is on lease to the city and will be tasked with patrolling the busiest subway station in the transit system: Times Square Subway Station.
"$9 an hour⌠$9 an hour. I know you wanted to write how we're wasting money, but I'm sorry I'm taking your thunder away. We're leasing at $9 an hour," Mayor Eric Adams boasted at the robot's unveiling Friday.
The shining new camera on wheels is part of a pilot program that will run for two months, the heads of the MTA and NYPD explained Friday. Officers trained on how to use K5 will accompany the robot through the station. The robot will not be on the platforms.
Even robots get breaks, apparently. Adams says overnight riders can catch a glimpse of K5, who will run between 12 a.m. and 6 a.m.
"It will record video that can be viewed in case of an emergency or a crime. It will not record audio, and it will not use facial recognition. However, the K5 does have a button that connects you immediately to a live person that New Yorkers can utilize 24/7 with questions, concerns or to report an incident if needed," the mayor explained.
Upon completion of the pilot program, Adams says the robot's effectiveness will be examined and the city will decide its best use.
Security cameras already cover the majority of the transit system throughout the boroughs â so why add another on wheels?
NYC Transit President said a lot of the station cameras "are hidden or not obvious for criminals. This is a reminder technology is watching folks."
Officials said K5 will not record audio or use facial recognition technology. But police warned anyone who tries to tamper with the 420-pound robot.
"If you come here and damage K5 or commit any crime in the subway system, prepare to be identified and arrested," said Chief of NYPD Transit Michael Kemper.
Police stats show subway crime this year is down 4.5% compared to 2022 and down 8.1% from 2019.
"It's fitting that we are near the theater district, because today K5 is taking center stage: welcome to New York City, K5 and welcome to the NYPD," Kemper added.
