There are tunnels under the building.
When it was built,
it was a series of three attached buildings,
theaters/hotel,
so stage players and guests could conveniently go from one to the other without going out into the street.
The hotel had a basement beer garden,
which later hosted many stars' road shows and bands into the 70's.
The hotel is the only one of the three left standing.
The builder was James Lawrence Kernan.
He was a Confederate,
and a pal of John Wilkes Booth.
Baltimore born and raised,
trained in the Jesuit college in Baltimore,
but also gave lots of money to the Jewish community there.
Later, he founded a children's hospital.
He lived and died in his hotel.
