Powder Keg Africa: Burkina Faso Military Junta Foils Yet Another Coup d’état – Population Takes to the Streets in Support for Captain Traore

Coup-on-coup seems to be the name of the game in the West African Republic of Burkina Faso.

Authorities in Burkina Faso say that a coup attempt against the military junta rulers has been thwarted by the country’s intelligence and security services.

This is yet another attempt to seize military power.

Captain Ibrahim Traore seized power in September, 2022 – just eight months after an earlier military coup had overthrown the elected President, Roch Marc Kabore.

Shortly after, in December 2022, there was an attempt to ‘destabilize state institutions’, engendered by civilians and a lieutenant-colonel named Emmanuel Zoungrana.

And earlier this month, three soldiers have been arrested and charged with plotting against the ruling military government.

Burkina Faso reported:

“Burkina Faso’s military rulers said in a statement on Wednesday that army officers and others had planned to seize power and plunge the country into ‘chaos’.

‘Officers and other alleged actors involved in this attempt at destabilization have been arrested and others are actively sought’, a spokesman for the ruling military Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo said in a statement without providing details.”

This latest coup attempt occurred on Tuesday (26), according to the statement by the government.

“The military government said it would seek to shed ‘all possible light on this plot’ and that it regretted ‘that officers whose oath is to defend their homeland have strayed into an undertaking of this nature’.

The country’s military prosecutor later said that four people had been arrested and two were on the run. An investigation has been opened based on ‘credible allegations about a plot against state security implicating officers’, the prosecutor said.”

Thousands of pro-government demonstrators took to the streets of Ouagadougou and elsewhere on Tuesday, to show support for the country’s military rulers.

Statement read out on state television had few details.

Josh Hawley demands Alejandro Mayorkas terminate 'Intelligence Experts Group' in DHS

Hawley argued that the group was nothing more than another attempt by the current administration to suppress the opposition.

On Thursday, Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas demanding the termination of the agency's recently announced "Intelligence Experts Group."

Hawley argued that the group was nothing more than another attempt by the current administration to suppress the opposition, citing the fact that it is slated to be led by three individuals who deemed the Hunter Biden laptop story to be Russian disiformation when it first broke in 2020.

"As you know," Hawley wrote, "John Brennan, James Clapper, and Paul Kolbe all signed onto the infamous October 2020 letter, which falsely declared the Hunter Biden laptop story to be 'Russian misinformation.' This was a clear attempt to aid then-candidate Joe Biden."

He went on to note that, "recent investigations have revealed text messages and emails that corroborate the corrupt intent behind the letter’s publication," and said it was "baffling" that Mayorkas' department would see the trio as "having any remaining credibility with respect to intelligence matters."

"Enlisting the support of these discredited officials as the nation prepares for the 2024 presidential election appears to signal that DHS will continue its attempts to censor speech that is inconvenient to the current Administration," Hawley continued, reminding Mayorkas that his department had already tried this type of thing before via the now-defunct "Disinformation Governance Board."

He concluded by urging Mayorkas to "immediately terminate" the new group, and asking him to provide Congress with any and all records related to it's creation, including communications between DHS and the White House.

Mayorkas announced the creation of the group on September 19, saying it was needed "at a time of unprecedented challenge" with "US intelligence enterprise facing threats from a range of malign actors, to include foreign nation-state adversaries, domestic violent extremists, cyber criminals, drug-trafficking cartels and other transnational criminal organizations."

NYPD arrests illegal immigrant for allegedly molesting 7-year-old girl in airport hotel-turned-shelter

The man allegedly held a knife against one of the girls and molested her.

A 34-year-old illegal immigrant is accused of molesting a 7-year-old girl at knifepoint in a Queens hotel that is housing illegal immigrants after luring the girl and her twin sister to his room.

Police sources told the New York Post that the girls and their family are staying at the Hotel Mint JFK Airport in Far Rockaway. They were playing in the hallway around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday when the man convinced the two girls to follow him to a second-story room.

The man allegedly held a knife against one of the girls and molested her.

When the girls’ mother knocked on the door, the man jumped out the window to escape. He later walked back into the building through the hotel lobby, where he was confronted by the girls’ older brother.

A fight ensued, with cops breaking up the brawl and arresting the man. Charges are still pending, and his name has not been released by police.

A neighbor of the hotel, 71-year-old Annette, described the conditions at the hotel as "lawlessness."

"It’s completely lawless," she said. "Clothes hanging out the windows, ruckus every night. Walking around in the rain with no shoes, barely [any] clothes. God help those poor children."

The hotel, which is sheltering illegal immigrants, is also accepting customer bookings, a worker told the outlet.

One family who traveled from the UK said the conditions at the hotel were appalling. They have been staying at the hotel for two weeks at $244 per night.

"We booked it on Expedia and it just said JFK Airport Hotel, the Mint Hotel JFK Airport," Stuart Warburton, who is staying with his wife, Kim, and mother, Maureen, said.

"We thought it was an airport hotel! It is absolutely disgusting in there," he continued. "And every night between midnight and 1, you hear all these children screaming, and then the parents push them out into the hallways and lock the doors and they leave the kids out running around and screaming and going crazy unattended in the hallways all night."

"The conditions are terrible," he added. "I wouldn’t let my dog live here in these conditions."

One Venezuelan couple who has been housed at the hotel for the past three days, described the hotel conditions as "wild," and said they heard a commotion in the hallway on Wednesday.

“Last night there [was] shouting, fighting, outside … a man was shouting at another man in front of [the lobby] door but we [went] inside and locked the door,” the woman told The Post on Thursday, noting that there were “many children” staying there. She said she didn’t know the people involved.

Her husband said that the conditions at the hotel weren’t much of an improvement over the last shelter they had been staying at before they relocated due to the conditions at that location.

"It is wild here," the man said. "At the shelter before, there [was] trouble every night. We moved here because I complained about the shelter. It was not safe. I could not sleep. This is wild and there is trouble. I do not let [my wife] walk without me."

Missile that killed two Poles was Ukrainian – Warsaw

Kiev has been unwilling to assist Warsaw’s efforts to probe the November 2022 incident, the Polish justice minister has said

A missile that killed two Polish farmers in the border village of Przewodow last November was fired by Ukrainian forces, a formal Polish probe into the matter has concluded. The findings were announced by the country’s justice minister, Zbigniew Ziobro, on Thursday.

“The investigation conducted by Polish prosecutors yielded an opinion that conclusively shows that this projectile was a Ukrainian missile,” Ziobro stated during a press conference in Lublin.

The projectile likely originated from Soviet-era stockpiles – or was possibly produced by modern Russia – yet it was fired by the Ukrainians, the minister stressed. While he did not elaborate on the exact nature of the missile, Polish media reported earlier this week that investigators had established that it was a 5V55, an older anti-aircraft projectile, which is fired by S-300 systems.

Kiev turned out to be very uncooperative during the probe into the incident, which ran for nearly for a year, Ziobro noted. The minister alleged that the lack of help from Ukrainian law enforcement was part of the country’s government policy.

“I very much regret this, but there has been no such cooperation in this matter for many months,” he said. “I don’t think this is a decision at the prosecutor’s level. I believe that these are decisions at a high political level in the Ukrainian state.”

The lack of cooperation from Ukraine is particularly regrettable given the fact that Poland, including its prosecutors, have been providing significant assistance to Kiev in its conflict with Moscow, Ziobro said.

The missile incident in Przewodow happened last November when the Ukrainian military was trying to repel a Russian missile barrage against targets in western Ukraine and the immediate vicinity of the city of Lvov. The projectile landed at a local grain farm, killing two civilians, aged 59 and 60, as well as inflicting material damage.

Kiev was quick to blame Moscow for the tragedy, insisting it was a Russian missile strike “on the collective security” of NATO. Despite evidence on the ground suggesting otherwise and even public refutation of such a version by Kiev’s Western backers, the Ukrainian authorities continued to maintain their claims that Russia was the culprit.

GOP Rep. Andrew Clyde Rips Republicans For Voting To Fund ‘Censorship’ Agency

Georgia GOP Rep. Andrew Clyde slammed his Republican colleagues in a statement Thursday, exclusively shared with the Daily Caller News Foundation, for allowing continued funding of an agency that censors speech.

The Cybersecurity Infrastructure and Security Agency (CISA) is tasked with flagging “disinformation concerns” on social media platforms to combat mis-, dis- and malinformation (MDM) largely related to elections and the COVID-19 pandemic. Clyde, a member of the House Appropriations Committee, took aim at the 109 House Republicans who voted against his amendment Wednesday evening that would cut CISA’s funding by 25%, he told the DCNF in a statement.

“I’m deeply disappointed that 109 of my Republican colleagues voted against my amendment to cut CISA funding by 25 percent,” Clyde told the DCNF in a statement. “The Biden Administration has dangerously weaponized this agency to collude with Big Tech and other intermediaries to censor Americans’ online speech and interfere in our elections — brazenly violating the First Amendment for nefarious political purposes. The country gave us the majority to save our nation from the Left’s destructive policies that continue to erode our constitutional rights, not continue the status quo and subsidize government abuse.”

“Yet by taking down my amendment, these Republicans shamelessly voted with Democrats to fully fund CISA’s unconstitutional practice of muzzling the American people’s speech. Despite this regrettable outcome, I remain committed to eliminating all forms of taxpayer-funded government-by-proxy censorship,” Clyde added.

CISA advanced “switchboards” during the 2020 election to enable state and local election officials to flag “misinformation” to remove from social media platforms. A report released by the House Judiciary Committee in late June suggested that CISA also used private entities for censorship during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Republicans voted with 211 House Democrats to tank Clyde’s amendment to the homeland security appropriations bill, according to the House Clerk.

Congress has until Saturday at 11:59 p.m. to pass all 12 appropriations bills or a continuing resolution to avoid a government shutdown. The House has passed only one, the veteran affairs spending bill, and is currently working to advance appropriations for homeland security, agriculture, defense and state-foreign operations.
