Kirby [White House press conference]: As [Biden] made clear, we cannot, under any circumstance, allow America's support for Ukraine to be interrupted.

Kirby: Supporting Ukraine strengthens our national security. It's the right thing to do, not just for the Ukrainian people, but for American people as well. Countering Putin's ability to wage war on a neighboring nation may actually prevent a larger conflict in which American troops might be needed.

Kirby: We believe that Americans understand what's at stake here…although it's first and foremost about Ukraine, and the Ukrainian people, and their sovereignty, it is bigger than that…there is more at stake here than just the borders of Ukraine, it's the vast security environment on the European continent.

Reporter: Does that mean that Ukraine falls if one day goes by without US funds [inaudible]?

Kirby: I wouldn't go so far as to say Ukraine falls, but we don't want to see any lapse.

Reporter: Is there any responsibility for [Biden] to be specific about, with the voters, about how long he thinks the United States should be willing to be involved in this? Should he be willing to say two years, five years, ten years, twenty years? How long does he commit the United States to being in this system, this situation which is costing tens and tens of billions of dollars on a regular basis?

Kirby: For as long as it takes means for as long as it takes…we're going to work as hard as we can, with might and main, to make it possible for Ukraine to end this war as soon as they can, but it has to be done in terms that President Zelenskyy is comfortable with, the Ukrainian people can accept, and that ends up with a whole, free, prosperous Ukraine, with international recognized borders.

Reporter: If the national security is truly at risk, as the administration says [Tuberville blocking promotions], isn't keeping that abortion policy in place, in effect, superseding national security?

Kirby: I'm not sure I understand.

Reporter: You want to get the nominations through, right? Take back the policy…

Kirby: Oh, so the suggestion is we should just turn our backs on one in five of every person in the United States military…just so we can get these officers confirmed?

Jean-Pierre: If republicans, that's what they want to do, that's what they want to waste their time doing, is going after a president who, they themselves, their own witnesses have said, and we saw this hearing just last week, that there is no evidence, no evidence, but still they want to move forward with an impeachment.

Reporter: If a member of congress is not safe on the streets on the nation's capitol, who is?

Jean-Pierre: Look, we're grateful and relieved that the congressman is unharmed. We understand what communities are going through across the country, not just in DC. That's why [Biden] took action very early on in his administration, to get the American Rescue Plan done…the fact is, [Biden] has taken action.
