Email Shows Weiss Violated DOJ Policy By Sending Letters To Cover For Garland

Now we know it wasn’t merely ‘unusual’ for Weiss to respond on behalf of the attorney general — it was in apparent violation of DOJ policy.

The Department of Justice directed Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss not to respond to congressional inquiries, according to an email provided exclusively to The Federalist. That same email stressed that under DOJ policy, only its Office of Legislative Affairs, or OLA, can respond to requests from the legislative branch.

Yet Weiss would later sign and dispatch a letter to the House Judiciary Committee in response to an inquiry sent directly to Attorney General Merrick Garland. And in that letter, Weiss misleadingly claimed he had “been granted ultimate authority over” the Hunter Biden investigation. The DOJ’s disregard of its own policy provides further proof that both Garland and Weiss intended to obfuscate the reality that Weiss never held the reins of the Hunter Biden investigation.

On May 9, 2022, Republican Sens. Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin wrote to Delaware U.S. Attorney Weiss inquiring about several aspects of the Hunter Biden investigation. After the senators sent a follow-up email to the Delaware U.S. attorney’s office requesting a response by week’s end, Delaware’s First Assistant U.S. Attorney Shannon Hanson asked the DOJ about protocol and then updated Weiss, stating in an email:

Consistent with my conversation with [redacted] last night, we are supposed to forward this and any other correspondence to OLA. Per DOJ policy, only OLA can respond on behalf of the Department to a request from the legislative branch.

On June 9, 2022, the OLA, as provided for in the DOJ’s policy, responded to Grassley and Johnson’s letter. The following month, Grassley and Johnson dispatched a second letter to Weiss, as well as Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray. In an email reviewed by The Federalist, the Office of Legislative Affairs told Weiss’s office it would “take the lead on drafting a response” to Grassley and Johnson’s letter.

The Heritage Foundation’s Oversight Project obtained these emails and the most recent one revealing the DOJ’s policy that only the “OLA can respond on behalf of the Department to a request from the legislative branch,” after its Director Mike Howell filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit against the DOJ. The email to Weiss summarizing the DOJ policy contained in this latest batch of court-ordered disclosures proves huge given the sequence of events that occurred earlier this year.

On May 25, 2023, House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland questioning him about the removal of the IRS whistleblowers from the Hunter Biden investigation. Although Jordan directed his inquiry to Garland, on June 7, 2023, Weiss dispatched a letter to the House Judiciary chair, noting in his opening: “Your May 25th letter to Attorney General Garland was forwarded to me, with a request that I respond on behalf of the Department.”

Girl allegedly raped in mental health ward of Perth Children's Hospital 'failed' by the state, health minister admits

The parents of a teenage girl allegedly raped in Perth Children's Hospital last year have slammed the state government's response to the revelation, strongly disputing a claim by the WA health minister they were given multiple opportunities to meet a health service executive.

Warning: This story contains details of sexual assault

"I feel like I'm being gaslit here," the girl's mother told ABC Investigations.

She described the health minister's claim as "utter bullshit".

The parents were responding to a press conference called by Western Australia's Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson in response to an ABC Investigations report revealing the alleged rape.

Asked if she had met with the family, Ms Sanderson said she had not, but that the chief executive of the Child and Adolescent Health Service (CAHS) had "made numerous attempts to speak to the family".

"Now, very understandably, I think the family has not wanted to speak to the hospital … many times," Ms Sanderson said.

However, the girl's mother disputed that.

"When the health minister says we were offered multiple meetings with the CEO [at Child and Adolescent Health Services] and the hospital, and that we declined, that is utterly incorrect," the mother said.

"We had one meeting while our daughter was still in the ward and met with the CEO and the psychiatrist where the CEO offered his deepest apologies. And that was the last contact we had from the CEO."

In response, Ms Sanderson said: "I want to assure the patient's family that we have taken this very seriously and I have done everything within my power as Minister to enact meaningful changes to ensure patient safety within this ward."

"If the family would like to meet with me to discuss the changes being made, there is an open invitation to meet with myself and the Board Chair.

"I acknowledge the distress and trauma experienced by the patient and their family."

EU Rep Says Fighting “Disinformation” About Ukraine is “High Priority”

The European Union is aligning with Ukraine in a discourse centered around navigating the realms of information, as articulated by Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

This conversation emerges in the expansive domain of the digital sphere, moving beyond the traditional frameworks of conflict. While information dynamics have always been a part of global interactions, the digital age introduces new facets to this domain.

During a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine-Ukrinform on Sunday, Borrell touched upon a reality: the ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine also extend into the realm of information. Amid allegations of manipulative propaganda and disinformation campaigns, the essence of free dialogue finds itself ignored amidst a complex backdrop.

“We have to fight against disinformation. This is high priority for the European Union and Ukraine,” Borrell said.

The dialogue is being propelled by entities like the Center for Strategic Communication and Information Security. Borrell’s visit to this hub provided insights into the broader narrative of information dynamics. The discourse on information extends well beyond regional confines, reaching into global dialogues across continents like Africa, Latin America, and Asia.

“We have to fight against a twisted narrative,” Borrell added, noting that Russia applied similar tactics during the Cold War and more recently, during the annexation of Crimea.

“We have to win this battle because it’s not only about territory, it is about the minds of the people. And that’s why we have to build organizations and support entities like I just visited, the Ukrainian Center for Strategic Communication and Information Security,” he continued.

Former general and White House chief of staff John Kelly speaks out against his former boss, Donald Trump

An American general who served as Donald Trump’s chief of staff in the White House has issued an extraordinary statement.

An American general who served as Donald Trump’s chief of staff in the White House for 18 months has gone on the record to back up a series of unflattering stories about the former US president, which had previously been attributed to anonymous sources.

John Kelly, a retired Marine general, was Mr Trump’s top official in the White House from July of 2017 to January of 2019. After leaving the job, he became an increasingly outspoken public critic of the then-president.

On Monday, US time, he gave a statement to CNN in which he accused Mr Trump of denigrating fallen American soldiers, and expressed concern about the former president’s continuing influence in politics.

“A person that thinks those who defend their country in uniform, or are shot down or seriously wounded in combat, or spend years being tortured as POWs are all ‘suckers’ because ‘there is nothing in it for them’,” Gen Kelly said.

“A person that did not want to be seen in the presence of military amputees because ‘it doesn’t look good for me’. A person who demonstrated open contempt for a Gold Star family, for all Gold Star families, on TV during the 2016 campaign, and rants that our most precious heroes who gave their lives in America’s defence are ‘losers’, and wouldn’t visit their graves in France.

“A person who is not truthful regarding his position on the protection of unborn life, on women, on minorities, on evangelical Christians, on Jews, on working men and women. A person that has no idea what America stands for and has no idea what America is all about. A person who cavalierly suggests that a selfless warrior who has served his country for 40 years in peacetime and war should lose his life for treason.

“A person who admires murderous dictators. A person that has nothing but contempt for our democratic institutions, our Constitution, and the rule of law.

“There is nothing more that can be said. God help us.”

Politico Pens 'Not All Nazis Are Bad' Op-Ed After Canada Lionizes Waffen SS: Taibbi

Start with the title: “Fighting against the USSR didn’t necessarily make you a Nazi.” The Politico Europe editor approving it was either high on glue, or finally decided yesterday to come to work in his secret Schutzstaffel uniform. No other explanation fits.

Writer Keir Giles argued there’s “disinformation” and a “lie” in the outrage over Canada’s parliament cheering former Waffen SS soldier Yaroslav Hunka:

This history is complicated because fighting against the USSR at the time didn’t necessarily make you a Nazi, just someone who had an excruciating choice over which of these two terror regimes to resist. However, the idea that foreign volunteers and conscripts were being allocated to the Waffen-SS rather than the Wehrmacht on administrative rather than ideological grounds is a hard sell for audiences conditioned to believe the SS’s primary task was genocide. And simple narratives like “everybody in the SS was guilty of war crimes” are more pervasive because they’re much simpler to grasp.

On “fighting against the USSR at the time didn’t necessarily make you a Nazi”: didn’t it if you were Yaroslav Hunka, who was actually a Nazi? Giles protests Hunka’s Waffen-SS service is just a “hard sell” to current audiences because they’ve been “conditioned to believe the SS’s primary task was genocide,” due to “simple narratives like ‘everybody in the SS was guilty of war crimes.’” Hunka’s 14th Waffen Grenadier unit, aka the Galicia Division, was in 2003 found by the Polish government to have murdered about 1000 inhabitants of Huta Pieniacka, now in the Lviv Oblast of Ukraine. The report singled out the “14th sub-unit” of the Galizien, which may be why Poland’s education Minister just said he’s “taken steps toward the possible extradition of this man.”

It doesn’t matter, because this story was never about the moral choices of Yaroslav Hunka, but the decision by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Canadian House of Commons Speaker Anthony Rota, and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland to applaud as a “Canadian hero” a former member of the SS. Hunka also happened also to have fought on the other side in a war that killed 42,000 Canadians. But who’s counting? As Giles writes, it’s “complicated.”

GOERING AT NUREMBERG: IT’S COMPLICATED would have fit National Lampoon’s famed “Hitler’s Tropical Escape” issue, or its later “Spring Fascism Preview.” A New York Times spoof would write itself: “For Augusto Pinochet, Good Governance, Complex Choices.” But Giles one-ups them all with this piece arguing, with no laugh track, the “nuanced truth” of SS service. It’s the literary equivalent of trying to scale the El Capitan Wall without a harness, an incredible thing to try, much less publish.

The stunner passage is near the end:

The Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center registered its outrage, noting that Hunka’s unit’s “crimes against humanity during the Holocaust are well-documented” — a statement that doesn’t seem to have any more substance than the accusation by Russia.

If you had “Simon Wiesenthal Center accused of echoing Russian propaganda” on your historical bingo card, congratulations.

Ford, GM Layoff Another 500 Workers As Strikes Ripple Across Heartland

After United Auto Workers expanded strikes against Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co. on Friday, both automakers laid off an additional 500 workers at four Midwestern plants because of the worsening impacts of labor actions about to enter the third week.

Reuters said Ford on Monday "was furloughing a total of 330 workers at its Chicago Stamping and Lima, Ohio Engine plants, while GM layoffs included 130 at its Parma, Ohio Metal Center and 34 at its Marion, Indiana Metal Center."

On Friday, UAW boss Shawn Fain expanded strikes against a General Motors plant in Lansing, Michigan, and a Ford Chicago assembly plant but spared Stellantis after last-minute talks that offered progress on a new four-year labor deal for UAW workers.

Alleged sex trafficking boss deported over underground prostitution network

An alleged human trafficking boss who exploited Australia’s migration regime to set up a sprawling underground sex worker racket has been hunted down and deported amid a major shake-up of border security.

Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil and Immigration Minister Andrew Giles will on Wednesday unveil the latest in a series of reforms to the visa system aimed at stopping what an inquiry led by ex-police chief Christine Nixon has described as the grotesque exploitation of foreign workers.

Among the reforms are the establishment of a new immigration compliance division within the Department of Home Affairs. A new multi-agency taskforce investigating suspected sex and drug traffickers, known to specialise in obtaining visas via fraud, will also run for at least two more years.

The reforms have been prompted by the Trafficked series of reports by The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, 60 Minutes and Stan, which also forced the Albanese government to commission the Nixon inquiry.

This masthead has also confirmed that Border Force agents recently swooped on Binjun Xie, the alleged Sydney-based human trafficking kingpin who has been on the run since several serious allegations against him were exposed in the Trafficked investigation in November.

The reforms are aimed at helping the Albanese government wrest back control of a migration and visa system racked with rorting, worker and student exploitation and delays.

The government will also crack down on domestic migration agents, who help tens of thousands of foreign nationals navigate the visa system to study, work or settle in Australia.

Agents will face stricter background checks and vetting, while the regulatory agency that oversees them will be given more powers to investigate and penalise agents. However, the government is yet to commit to regulating overseas based agents or introducing the wider anti-money laundering regime called for by Nixon, a former Victorian police commissioner.

The continuing overhaul of the migration system comes after the Albanese government earlier this week announced related reforms aimed at combatting corruption in the overseas education sector, including a new anti-corruption unit to police the nation’s vocational and training industry and combat dodgy education agents.

Trafficked unveiled allegations of visa rorting, human trafficking and exploitation in Australia, including in a booming underground prostitution industry controlled by organised criminals such as Xie.

British govt funded plan for censorship of factual NATO criticism

Leaked documents reveal a British intel contractor singled out The Grayzone’s Max Blumenthal for online censorship, and seeks to redefine factual criticism of NATO as disinformation.

A leaked 130-page report made public here for the first time documents an international censorship campaign funded by the British government and led by a public relations contractor for U.S. Special Operations Forces. The basic strategy is to redefine “disinformation” to include even factual criticism of the U.S. military or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and then to exert “coordinated action to pressure social media and digital market actors” to “moderate” such speech. The previously secret report also recommends “intensifying cooperation among the intelligence agencies within the EU [European Union]”, which in the past has included Ukrainian intelligence conducting what it described as a “multi-level special operation” in Spain to arrest a critical journalist for treason over his YouTube broadcasts.
