I did not have a strong opinion about Colony Ridge until this week. I was willing to believe that claims about it being a hub for illegal aliens were overblown. The criticisms that it was the "not in my backyard" crowd upset over a trailer park seemed plausible.
Then I took a drive to see it myself.
The developers had reached out to
@TexasScorecard
about giving us a tour. When our managing editor,
@bwaltens
, told them he wanted to bring a video crew, Colony Ridge ghosted us. They seemed uninterested in answering hard questions on camera.
(As an aside, I'm now seeing Colony Ridge folks are giving softball interviews to leftwing outlets that defend illegal immigration.)
Waltens and I drove ourselves around the sprawling "development." Honestly, it felt more like Mexico than the United States. The "paved streets" were cheaply laid concrete with hastily painted stripes. It seemed "good enough" for a third-world country but not in keeping with the infrastructure one would expect for a place so new in Texas.
This is a "minimal effort" development.
There were no street lights or traffic signals. Not unusual for a "rural" area, but VERY unusual for the density of this place.
Lots of homes sported Mexican flags, either as flags or gate decorations. I did not see a single American flag anywhere but on the (massive) public and charter schools serving the area.
At the Colony Ridge and Terrenos offices, as well as around the development, their signage makes a big deal about using "ITINs" to secure "financing." ITINs, of course, are issued without regard to citizenship status. Even people in the country illegally can get an ITIN.
With thousands of illegal aliens crossing into the United States daily, they have to be going somewhere. It appears Colony Ridge is offering them a home. Frankly, it felt a little predatory.
In every war, there are profiteers. Colony Ridge shows that the invasion occurring at our southern border is no exception.
