That Big House Speaker Debate Just Got Canceled
For a brief moment, Fox News had secured a "debate" between at least three House Speaker candidates, including Jim Jordan and Steve Scalise. Just hours after the announcement, though, the event has been canceled.
That comes after Kevin McCarthy was booted from the role, opening up a schism within the Republican party. How things end is anyone's guess.
Fox News will no longer air a “joint interview” with the three major Republican candidates to succeed Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as Speaker of the House on Monday.
Reps. Jim Jordan (R-OH), Steve Scalise (R-LA), and Kevin Hern (R-OK) had been scheduled to join Bret Baier on Special Report Monday to make each of their respective cases for serving as the next leader of the GOP conference in the House, but all three candidates have thought better of attending the forum.
The nationally televised event had been scheduled to precede a meeting of House Republicans on Tuesday, when they are expected to officially select who to nominate to serve as the next Speaker, but members expressed concern about the wisdom of the event.
From an entertainment standpoint, this is a bit of a letdown. Certainly, it would have been nice to see someone like Jordan lay out his vision as well.
With that said, taking a broader view of the matter, this was a really, really dumb idea. The Speaker of the House is not elected by a national popular vote. Whoever holds that position is an internal issue for Congress to decide, and a candidate whispering sweet nothings into the ears of the masses may not actually be the best person for the job.
Being Speaker of the House is primarily about two things: Maintaining caucus cohesion and fundraising. The former means you will see compromises along the way in order to win the majority over so it can operate as a monolith when necessary. Without that, the majority ends up ceding the governing power to the minority (assuming they can hold together, and Democrats always hold together). That's a fine line to walk.
Fundraising also can't be discounted. McCarthy, whatever his flaws as a leader, was an extremely good fundraiser, and without his effort, we would not have a House majority right now. The next speaker has to take that role seriously. The position isn't one where a person just has the luxury of grandstanding for the cameras all the time. There's actual work involved and a real skillset required.
Simply put, a red-meat debate wasn't going to do anything but set unrealistic expectations as various candidates made promises they knew they wouldn't be able to keep. A waste of time comes to mind.
The last reason this cancelation is good news is that I see no reason to continue to prop Fox News up in such a regard. What exactly has that network done in the last few years to earn that kind of deference from the GOP? The last primary debate was an abject disaster, with an MSNBC-style pro-illegal immigration hack asking questions while one of the other moderators suggested that being pro-life was an electoral liability. I think Fox News should be shown the same respect they show conservatives, which isn't much.

Within several days of The New York Post breaking its blockbuster 2020 story on Hunter Biden’s laptop, the FBI received a flash drive containing emails and text messages from the cellphones of one of Hunter’s business partners, confirming the contents of Hunter’s computer were real and not “disinformation,” as the FBI led social media and the public to believe.
On Oct. 23, 2020, forensic examiners from the FBI’s Computer Analysis and Response Team (CART) took into inventory the flash drive, which was loaded with the emails and texts from an iPhone and two Blackberry phones that Hunter’s former business associate Tony Bobulinski used to communicate with the president’s son about a lucrative joint venture with Chinese nationals.
The data on the flash drive covered the period from early 2015 through late 2017, according to the FBI report, known as an FD-302, which summarized the interview with Bobulinski.
“BOBULINSKI was aware that the emails published by the New York Post were legitimate because BOBULINSKI was copied on them and had records of the emails on his own cellular devices,” the interviewing agents wrote in their 13-page report.

The Jobs Report Isn’t As Good As It Looks - Wages aren’t rising as quickly, and hours are falling for workers
On Friday morning, Wall Street went into conniptions over the newest jobs report. Last month, the economy added 336,000 new jobs — about double what analysts had expected — with the unemployment rate holding still at 3.8 percent, according to the latest numbers from the Labor Department. Also, hourly wages have risen faster than inflation. See, the economy is meant to be slowing down. The Federal Reserve has been hiking interest rates, and this is supposed to be weighing down the flow of money throughout the economy — exactly the kind of conditions that would be adverse to creating a third of a million new jobs in a month. The knee-jerk reaction from investors was to sell: The Dow Jones fell more than 200 points, and bond yields rose across the board. (Yields rise when the price of the bonds fall.)
This knee-jerk reaction missed the bleaker picture: The jobs that are getting added are low-paying, wages are stagnating, and hours are falling. Maybe this is a mind-numbingly basic point to make, but one important reason jobs matter in an economy is that they spread money around to people. (This is not the only reason, and I’ll get to that below.) So a big jobs gain and high wages are, on the face of it, a sign that businesses are having no problem doing that. But take a closer look at how this actually works for most people. Yes, hourly wages have risen 4.2 percent over the past year, but that only matters if people are working a long enough week to afford their lifestyle. On that measure, weekly pay has risen only 3.5 percent since last September, which is lower than the inflation rate. (For nonsupervisory employees — people who aren’t managers or bosses, basically — the weekly gains are 3.7 percent, exactly in line with inflation.) Hours are slightly lower for all workers from last year, but those have been falling since 2021, when people were working more hours than ever since at least 2006.

Syria, Russia Pound Idlib After Terror Attack Killed 80 People At Homs Military College
Overnight and into Friday the Syrian Army pummeled Idlib province with artillery and missiles, in retaliation for a Thursday drone attack conducted by the region's al-Qaeda groups which scored a direct hit on a crowded military graduation ceremony at Homs military college.
Syria's health ministry in the immediate aftermath said the drone attack killed 80 people and wounded 240 more. Al Jazeera and other regional sources have cited over 100 dead, which included military officers and their family members. At least six children were among the deceased, in what may be the single deadliest terror attack inside Syria in years.

Multiple videos later circulated of major counterattacks by Syrian forces on al-Qaeda occupied Idlib, in a rare large assault.
Various hardline jihadist groups have held Idlib since 2015, at which time they were helped in the takeover by the United States and its allies, in an operation directed out of southern Turkey.
A Syrian military statement alluded to insurgents having received help from "international forces" in the past:
Syria’s military said in an earlier statement that drones laden with explosives targeted the ceremony packed with young officers and their families as it was wrapping up. Without naming any particular group, the military accused insurgents "backed by known international forces" of the attack and said "it will respond with full force and decisiveness to these terrorist organizations, wherever they exist."
NATO member Turkey continues to be a main backer of the jihadist insurgents who hold Idlib province.
Regional sources have said Syrian had help from Russia allied forces in pounding Idlib, which is ongoing into Friday. "Airstrikes pounded the positions of the Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP) and the Emigrants Brigade, foreign extremist militias consisting of Chinese Uyghur and Chechen militants," wrote The Cradle.
"Syrian fighter jets, in coordination with the Russian air force, targeted the Al-Ghab plain and the town of Areeha in the Idlib governorate, as well as the city of Jisr al-Shughour – which fell to US-backed extremist groups in 2015," the publication added.
It is believed that the TIP and Emigrants Brigade "are the two armed groups that have the technological capabilities to conduct drone attacks"; however, Damascus didn't name a specific group as being behind the devastating drone attack. In prior years whenever Syrian and Russian forces prepared to retake Idlib province from the armed insurgents, the the United States and its allies have threatened military intervention.

Documents show that the SEC relied on input from the for-profit company to draft the proposed rule. Some critics argue that the estimates from Persefoni low-balled the price tags unrealistically for such accounting to make them more politically palatable.
Persefoni, billing itself as “The Platform for Carbon Accounting – Built For Climate Disclosure,” and similar outfits are emerging as their own service industry as they stand to profit from the new rule, since most companies do not have the staff or expertise to calculate their carbon footprints.
While environmentalists have hailed the rule as an important step in forcing companies to grapple with their impact on the climate by exposing it to the public, critics argue that it goes far beyond the SEC’s core mission of protecting investors. In voting against a draft of the proposal, SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce, a Trump appointee, said it “forces investors to view companies through the eyes of a vocal set of stakeholders” – as opposed to traditional shareholders – “for whom a company’s climate reputation is of equal or greater importance than a company’s financial performance.”
The SEC and Persefoni each declined to comment for this article.
