Israeli spy chiefs led secret revolt against Netanyahu overhaul plans, leaked documents say

April 9, 2023

As the Biden administration races to investigate a leak of classified U.S. documents, much of Washington is remaining silent about a particularly sensitive disclosure within the trove of files: an alleged revolt by Israel’s top spy service against the judicial overhaul proposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The leaked document labeled “top secret” says that in February, senior leaders of the Mossad spy service “advocated for Mossad officials and Israeli citizens to protest the new Israeli Government’s proposed judicial reforms, including several explicit calls to action that decried the Israeli Government, according to signals intelligence.”

By itself, the direct intervention into Israeli politics by the Mossad, an external spy service forbidden from wading into domestic matters, would be a significant revelation. That the information surfaced as a result, apparently, of U.S. espionage on its closest Middle East ally could further inflame what has been a time of historic political unrest in Israel.

Mossad enraged after Netanyahu hints at external candidate for agency chief

A Yedioth report reveals that Israel's spy agency is currently in the middle of an upheaval after Netanyahu threw an external candidate into the race for Mossad Chief.

Published: 11.29.15

Nehushtan is in line to replace the agency's current chief, Tamir Pardo who is set to finish his term in January.

A source with intimate knowledge of the race for Mossad chief told Yedioth that Nehushtan's name had been dropped in the hat for chief nearly a month ago by an official close to Netanyahu. The official claimed that Nehushtan was "very likely to" beat out the three candidates from within the agency: Rami Ben-Barak, Yossi Cohen, and the current deputy Mossad chief, N'.

Netanyahu finished the second round of interviews with the three candidates only last week. The interviews were reportedly both long and highly detailed, during which each candidate described their world view, and their plan for the future of the Mossad.

Former leaders of Israel’s security services are speaking out against Netanyahu’s policies

Updated 11:11 PM MDT, September 12, 2023

HERZLIYA, Israel (AP) — They contended with bloody uprisings, destabilizing wars and even the assassination of a prime minister during their service. But for dozens of former Israeli security commanders, the policies of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s far-right government are the biggest threat yet to the country’s future.

In unprecedented opposition, more than 180 former senior officials from the Mossad, the Shin Bet domestic security agency, the military and the police have united against steps they say will shatter Israel’s resilience in the face of mounting threats from the West Bank, Lebanon and Iran.

“We were used to dealing with external threats,” said Tamir Pardo, a former head of Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency and a leader of the new group. “We’ve been through wars, through military operations and all of a sudden you realize that the greatest threat to the state of Israel is internal.”
