Israeli Army Official Admits Gaza Bombing Campaign Is Focused on 'Damage and Not on Accuracy'

An Israeli military spokesman admitted Tuesday what was plainly obvious to witnesses of the mass destruction underway in the besieged Gaza Strip: that the goal of Israel's ongoing bombing campaign is to inflict severe damage on the occupied territory, not to strictly target Hamas military installations.
"The emphasis is on damage and not on accuracy," Israel Defense Forces official Daniel Hagari said, according toHaaretz.
Hagari's remarks came after Israeli airstrikes leveled residential buildings, ripped through a crowded marketplace in Gaza's largest refugee camp, damaged hospitals and mosques, and wiped out families in the wake of a Hamas attack on Israel that killed hundreds of people.
The New York Timesreported that Israeli strikes "also hit four mosques in the Shati refugee camp on Monday, according to Gaza authorities, toppling their domes and killing worshipers inside. Neighbors picked through the rubble of the Sousi mosque, where witnesses said boys had been playing soccer just outside when it was destroyed."
Hagari said in a briefing late Monday that Israel's aerial assault on Gaza had used "thousands of armaments" over the previous 24 hours.
"To put that in perspective, the pace of the strikes is five times that of the strikes on Hezbollah in the Second Lebanon War," said Hagari. "I repeat, five times what it was against Hezbollah in the Second Lebanon War."
The IDF official's comments amplified warnings that Israel is collectively punishing Gaza's population of around 2 million people, roughly half of whom are children. Earlier Monday, Israel's defense minister announced a "total" blockade of the enclave, cutting off its electricity supply and vowing to prevent all food and fuel from entering.
Collective punishment is a war crime.

Hajer Naili, director of communications at the nonprofit Center for Civilians in Conflict, added that "such a statement indicates that Israel is neither using precaution, proportionality, [nor] distinguishing between civilians and combatants when launching attacks in Gaza."
"This is a violation of international humanitarian law," Naili wrote. "The [international] community must stop condoning such violations."

Palestinian UN Envoy Accuses Israel of 'Genocidal' Campaign Against Gaza
The Palestinian envoy to the United Nations on Tuesday described Israel's bombardment of the Gaza Strip and vow to impose a complete siege on the Hamas-controlled Palestinian enclave as "nothing less than genocidal."
Hamas militants carried out their deadliest attack in Israel's history on Saturday, when gunmen rampaged through Israeli towns, killing more than 1,000 people and taking scores of hostages to Gaza. Israel has retaliated with air strikes on Gaza that have razed entire districts as it prepares for a possible ground offensive.

"These acts constitute war crimes," he wrote.
U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan said on Tuesday that his understanding was that "the concept of siege is not something that in fact is going to be pursued by the Israeli government," adding that Washington was speaking with the Israeli government "about their actions in this regard."
Sullivan also said U.S. President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday discussed "the difference between going full bore against Hamas terrorists and how we distinguish between terrorists and innocent civilians."
Israel's U.N. Ambassador Gilad Erdan on Sunday accused Hamas of war crimes and said it was time to "obliterate Hamas terror infrastructure," as the 15-member U.N. Security Council met behind closed-doors on the conflict.
U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday said he was "deeply distressed" by Israel's announcement of a complete siege on Gaza.
"The humanitarian situation in Gaza was extremely dire before these hostilities; now it will only deteriorate exponentially," Guterres said.

Washington, D.C.'s Board of Election says it is the victim of a data breach, potentially providing access to 600,000 lines of voter data.

The voter records were accessed through DataNet, a web server used by board, but no internal databases were directly compromised, according to the board.

It was unclear when the board website will back to running normally.
The Washington Post reports the alleged culprits posted the data for sale on its dark web site. The newspaper also found the data for sale on a dark web hacking forum, with one post including the address and personal information of several apparent D.C. voters
A board spokesperson couldn’t confirm the authenticity of the posts, DCist also reports.
Most ransomware attacks are an encryption of data, which blocks the owner's access to it. And the data is unencrypted in exchange for money, or ransom.
