National Guard Chief Gen. Daniel Hokanson Dismisses Leaked Email Claiming Enlisted Troops are Anti-Semitic and Don’t Want to Risk Lives for Israel

A cyber group linked to the Iranian Resistance Front, a pro-regime group, allegedly obtained a crucial email exchange between General Daniel R. Hokanson, the head of the U.S. National Guard Bureau, and a high-ranking officer within the organization.

The email published by Iran’s Tasnim News Agency claimed a growing reluctance among American troops to put their lives on the line for Israel. The leak also showed that General Hokanson blames former President Donald Trump for worsening the situation.

The alleged email, dated October 13 2023, – just last week! – was obtained from one of the internal messaging systems of the US National Guard.

In the email, General Hokanson accused the troops of being anti-Semitic for openly stating they don’t want to sacrifice their lives for Israel. He added that Trump’s criticism of Netanyahu on Wednesday would only make matters worse.

In the alleged email, Hokanson believed that the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) was unprepared for the sudden escalation in the region and lacked the necessary resources to back Israel should the situation spiral into a broader conflict.

He added that if Hezbollah or other regional actors were to join the conflict, Israel would be unable to defend itself.

Israel asks US for ‘emergency’ $10 billion – NYT

The White House has been working on a package that would combine aid to Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan, the newspaper said

Israel has requested $10 billion in emergency assistance from the US, the New York Times reported on Monday, citing three unnamed officials. The White House and members of Congress are working on a package that would combine military assistance to Israel with aid to Ukraine and Taiwan, as well as funds to fortify the US-Mexico border, the paper said.

Speaking during a visit to Tel Aviv on Sunday, US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said lawmakers had discussed supplying Israel with new and replacement ammunition, precision-guided bombs and Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) kits, which convert standard munitions into more accurate ones, according to the NYT.

The report did not provide further details on the requested $10 billion combined aid package.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas flared up on October 7, when the Palestinian militant group attacked southern Israel with rockets and sent fighters over the border, killing around 1,400 people.

The Israel Defense Forces responded by dropping thousands of bombs on Gaza and cutting off the enclave's water and electricity supply. Local health authorities say more than 2,800 Palestinians have died in the air raids over the past 10 days.

On Monday, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Washington could afford to support Israel's military needs as well as Ukraine's. She insisted that the financial resources of the US are sufficient to back its allies abroad. However, the official acknowledged concerns over the potential economic impact of a wider conflict in the Middle East.

While top US officials insist that both Israel and Ukraine can be supported, CNN reported last week that the Pentagon had called on defense manufacturers to ramp up production to make up for shortfalls in stockpiles due to arms being transferred to Kiev, in order to ensure it can supply Israel.

On Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that his country was prepared for a “long war” and would fight until it completely defeats Hamas. He added that Israel is willing to retaliate against the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah if it attempts to interfere in the conflict.

To some degree, the international spotlight and pressure surrounding the Ukraine war has been taken off Putin as the world's attention has shifted to rapidly moving events in Gaza and Israel.

Xi and Putin had last met in the Chinese capital in early 2022, just three weeks before Russia's invasion of Ukraine was launched on Feb. 24.

Both are now expected to find common ground on criticizing Israel's actions, and will likely renew calls for a ceasefire in Gaza. Over the weekend China's foreign ministry blasted Israel's actions as collective punishment against Palestinians.

"Israel’s actions have gone beyond self-defense and it should heed the call of the international community and the Secretary-General of the United Nations to stop its collective punishment of the people in Gaza," Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Saudi Arabia counterpart Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud in a Sunday call.

In a separate call he told Turkey's FM: "The exercise of the right of self-defense should abide by international humanitarian law and should not be at the expense of innocent civilian casualties."

Leftist Spanish Gov’t Minister Demands Israeli PM Netanyahu Face War Crimes Charges for Retaliation Against Hamas

A leading member of the leftist coalition government in Spain has called for Benjamin Netanyahu and other members of the Israeli government to be brought before the International Criminal Court for “war crimes.”

The general secretary of the far-left Trotskyite Podemos party and the acting Minister of Social Rights Ione Belarra called on the caretaker socialist Spanish government of Pedro Sánchez to petition the Prosecutor’s Office of the International Criminal Court to investigate alleged war crimes committed in Palestine by the Netanyahu government in Jerusalem.

In a video published on social media, Belarra claimed, according to El Mundo, that “the State of Israel is carrying out a planned genocide in the Gaza Strip” and that the “bombings on the civilian population are a collective punishment that seriously violates international law and can be considered war crimes.”

The Spanish politician went on to claim that the “deep cause” of the ongoing conflict is “Israel’s occupation and apartheid of Palestine.” Belarra also accused the Israeli government — apparently citing disputed quotes from Netanyahu — of propping up Hamas in order to “weaken secular sectors of the Palestinian resistance” and therefore it is “unspeakable hypocrisy… to use Hamas as an excuse to murder thousands of Palestinian civilians, including boys and girls.”

“Using the terrible murders of Israeli civilians by Palestinian armed factions as an excuse to justify Israel’s crimes and the masquerade in Gaza is absolutely unacceptable,” the Podemos leader said.

Balerra went on to accuse the European Union and the United States of being complicit in the alleged war crimes, saying that they “are not only looking the other way, they are encouraging the State of Israel in its policy of apartheid and occupation that seriously violates human rights.”

Israel PM Netanyahu Tells Germany That Hamas ‘Are the New Nazis’

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz made a solidarity trip to Israel on Tuesday where he heard how the Hamas terror attack was the worst assault on Jewish people since the Holocaust and that Hamas are “the new Nazis”.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stood alongside his German counterpart Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Tel Aviv on Tuesday and declared in their massive terrorist attack against Israel earlier this month, Hamas had become the Nazis of the 21st century.

Describing the brutal massacre of over 1,300 Israelis and tourists by Hamas terrorists, Netanyahu said per The Times of Israel: “The decapitation of people; the shooting of little children with bound hands; the murder of children in front of their parents… this is the savagery that we only remember from the Nazi crimes of the Holocaust.”

Hamas had proven their evil, Netanyahu declared. He continued: “Hamas are the new Nazis, Hamas is ISIS… And just as the world united to defeat the Nazis, just as the world united to defeat ISIS, the world has to stand united behind Israel to defeat Hamas”.

It is in the interests of Israel’s international partners to join to help end Hamas, Netanyahu said, because if the “barbarism” of such attacks weren’t defeated, the idea would spread. He told Scholz: “If it’s not stopped here, this savagery will reach you very soon, and reach the entire world”.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who stood behind Netanyahu as he spoke, replied that Germany’s place was beside Israel. Scholz reciprocated Netanyahu’s point about Nazism when the Germany of nearly a century ago elected an antisemitic national socialist government led by Adolf Hitler which led to the Holocaust.

U.S.-based venture capital (VC) firms GGV Capital, GSR Ventures, IDG Capital, Sequoia Capital and Walden International are variously identified as “participating institutions” and/or “angel investors” in Chinese government-backed “start-up” contests supporting the Thousand Talents Plan, according to the contest’s brochures and promotional videos. Executives from these five VC firms have served as Thousand Talents Plan start-up contest judges, steering committee members and mentors for contestants going back to the first 2012 contest, according to a DCNF review of contest records.

For example, the first contest’s website identifies GSR Ventures’ co-founder, Sonny Wu, and IDG Capital’s global chairman, Hugo Shong, as steering committee members. The website also lists GGV Capital’s managing partner, Jixun Foo, and Sequoia Capital’s global executive partner, Neil Shen, as judges. and mentors for contestants as including Walden International’s managing director, Bill Li.

“Launched in 2008, the Thousand Talents Plan incentivizes individuals engaged in research and development in the United States to transmit the knowledge and research they gain here to China in exchange for salaries, research funding, lab space and other incentives,” a staff report by the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs said in 2019.

In January 2022, Jeff Stoff, a former U.S. government analyst and linguist, warned the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission about how China is using “start-up contests” to obtain U.S. technology.

“A key element of China’s technology transfer apparatus are the tethers it has built to tap into the R&D and innovation occurring inside the U.S.,” Stoff testified in 2022. “In addition to benefitting from informal research collaboration and partnerships with U.S. academic institutions described in the previous section, China’s party-state deploys official and unofficial proxies; investment structures such as venture capital funds, incubators and innovation centers; start-up contests; talent programs and supporting recruitment networks; and partnerships with diaspora organizations, at least some of which are part of China’s United Front apparatus commonly and myopically viewed in terms of political influence operations.”

Retired Gen. David Petraeus, who led the U.S.’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, said in an interview that the recent terrorist attacks in Israel were worse than the terror attacks that hit the U.S. on September 11, 2001.

Petraeus, the former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, said that the attacks — which killed at least 1,400 Israelis and wounded 3,000+ more — were “far worse than 9/11” when adjusted for the difference in population size.

“This is the equivalent of the U.S. having experienced over 40,000 losses, rather than the 3,000 terrible losses that we sustained in the attacks of 9/11,” he said.

He said that Israel’s ground offensive inside Gaza to root out Hamas, the terror group that carried out the attacks, would be a “very, very tough fight.”

“I almost can’t imagine a more challenging contextual set of circumstances here than what they face,” he told CBS News. “There are tunnels; there will be rooms that will have improvised explosive devices. You have to clear every building, every floor, every room, every basement, every tunnel. Civilian losses are inevitable, and tough Israeli losses lie ahead as well.”

He said that he was surprised by how sophisticated the attack was and even more surprised that no intelligence agencies picked up on it.

“This is a very substantial operation, and the planning of it alone would have been very considerable; then, the training and equipping and positioning of forces, then the actual conduct of it,” he said. “That all of that could take place and not spark much increased military readiness is really quite stunning.”

He said that the only way Hamas was able to carry out the attacks without was through “dramatic improvement” in their “operational security.”

“Very, very creative use of these munitions and capabilities to degrade dramatically, in some cases knock out, the Israeli ability to see what is going around this quite formidable iron fence that was established,” he said.

When asked if Hamas’ objective was simply to just “kill Jews,” Petraeus responded: “That’s always [their] objective. Destroy Israel.”

US Secretly Provided Ukraine With Cluster Bomb ATACMS

US officials told NYT that Ukraine has already used the long-range missiles

CNN reported Tuesday that the US has secretly provided Ukraine with Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), munitions that typically have a range of about 190 miles and can be fired from the HIMARS rocket systems.

US officials told The New York Times that the ATACMS the US has provided are armed with cluster bombs, a widely banned munition that’s notorious for killing civilians due to its indiscriminate nature. Cluster bombs spread small submunitions over large areas and can leave duds behind that civilians can come across years after the conflict.

While most ATACMS have a range of 190 miles, the Times report said that the version the US secretly provided Ukraine has less of a range than the Storm Shadow missiles that the British have given Kyiv, which can hit targets up to 155 miles away.

The US officials said Ukraine has already used the ATACMS in strikes on two airfields in Russian-controlled areas of Ukraine on Tuesday. Oleksiy Goncharenko, a Ukrainian member of parliament, also said the ATACMS were already in use.

“ATACMS is already with us. The airfield in Berdyansk with enemy equipment was hit by them. Thanks to our partners!” Goncharenko wrote on X. Berdyansk is a southern city in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia oblast. Ukrainian officials also said they struck an airfield in Luhansk and claimed they destroyed nine helicopters in the two attacks, which has not been confirmed by the Russian side.

It’s not clear when the US delivered ATACMS to Ukraine. After Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Washington in September, media reports said President Biden decided to arm Ukraine with a cluster bomb version of ATACMS, but the Pentagon did not list the missiles in any recent weapons packages.

Ukraine had been requesting ATACMS from the US throughout the conflict. The administration was initially hesitant over concerns of escalation. The Times report said US officials long believed “the use of ATACMS could cross one of the ‘red lines’ that would lead Russia to consider using a tactical nuclear weapon.” But escalation concerns have waned despite Russia’s many warnings against providing the missiles.

An Israeli air strike killed hundreds of people at a Gaza City hospital on Tuesday, health authorities in the Hamas-run enclave said, and the United Nation said an Israeli strike also hit one of its schools being used as a shelter.

A Gaza civil defence chief said on Al-Jazeera television that more than 300 people were killed at Al-Ahli al-Arabi Hospital. A Gaza Health Ministry official said at least 500 people were killed and injured. Both departments are under the Hamas-run government.

Civil defence spokesman Mahmoud Bassal described the bombing as a "massacre," the Middle East Eye reports.

"What is happening is collective punishment," Bassal said. "When will the world stand up for Gaza? This is the highest level of aggression from Israel. The floor of the hospital is covered in dead bodies and we don't have anyone to pick them up."
