I don't think he seems "smooth" at all.
He seems pretty down-to-earth and well-prepared (much like other younger reps linked to Trump).
From the clips I have seen, he does a pretty good job questioning testifiers in committee.
As I recall, Trump has mentioned that he recruited him to run for office (no sauce, but maybe he said this when introducing Byron at a rally).
Still, my first naive impression would be that you need more inside wheeler dealer skills accrued with experience to succeed as speaker.
But maybe that is not the game right now and what matters is that he is Trump's guy?
