Read today’s gospel keeping in mind that the Pharisees (Jews) and Herodians (Harod’s men) were enemies….and they worked together to try to take down Jesus, whom both of them hated and feared because he threatened their power.
The Pharisees went off
and plotted how they might entrap Jesus in speech.
They sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying,
"Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man
and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.
And you are not concerned with anyone's opinion,
for you do not regard a person's status.
Tell us, then, what is your opinion:
Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?"
Knowing their malice, Jesus said,
"Why are you testing me, you hypocrites?
Show me the coin that pays the census tax."
Then they handed him the Roman coin.
He said to them, "Whose image is this and whose inscription?"
They replied, "Caesar's."
At that he said to them,
"Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar
and to God what belongs to God."
Our priests gave a good homily today….gave much historic detail just to show how brilliant Jesus’ answer was.
For example, when they approached Jesus with this question, they were in the Temple, where they were not supposed to have coins, or money on them….(remember Jesus overturning the tables of the money changers in the temple?) so when Jesus asked them for a coin, the readily pulled one out without even thinking that by doing so, they were showing themselves to be in violation of the Jewish law, of which they were supposedly the elite teachers.
Another aspect of the brilliance of the way Jesus answered is that he asked ‘whose IMAGE’ is on the coin,.. thereby , again, letting them expose themselves as hypocrites because by using the word ‘image’ he was confirming that they should have known not to even ask such a stupid question because while the coin is in Caesar’s image, and belongs to him, humans were created in God’s image and belonged to him.
So , in other words Jesus was only calling them out as hypocrites, but stupid hypocrites.
And that…is why they had to kill him.
