Another use for cyanide is in mining to release precious metals from certain kinds of ores.

Basically they mine the crushed ore from the ground, place it in a great heap on a heap-leaching pad (sort of a sealed artificial pond with berms) then put the solution on it, and wait several months. Once the metal is in the solution, they process it further to obtain the metal.
