>Can the NG work in coordination w/ the marines?
Yes. The NG is a branch of the Army. The Marines are a branch of the Navy. One of Marines' responsibilities is to work in coordination with the Army.
The Marines and the National Guard are kind of like the President’s own personal task force.
He can call up the NG when there is the “inability to execute Federal law with active forces.” When not called up for Federal work, the NG reports to the state governors except in DC which always reports directly to the President. The head of the NG is a four star general and is part of the Joint Chief’s of Staff.

One of the responsibilities of the Marines is “Such other duties as the President or Department of Defense may direct.” The Marine Band is dubbed the “President’s Own.” Marines guard presidential retreats including Camp David. Marines provide transport in Marine One for the President and Marine Two for the Vice President.

The Marines; Hymn is the oldest official song in the US Armed Forces. Here’s the end of the third verse:
If the Army and the Navy
Ever look on Heaven’s scenes,
They will find the streets are guarded
By United States Marines.
I feel much better now.
