Ukraine ‘one of the most corrupt countries in the world’ – EU state's PM
Slovak PM Robert Fico has questioned the wisdom of the bloc furnishing the country with another €50 billion
Ukraine is “one of the most corrupt countries in the world,” Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico told reporters on Friday following an EU summit in Brussels, raising doubts about the bloc’s unprecedented funding to Kiev.
In particular, Fico questioned the wisdom of an additional €50 billion ($52.9 billion) earmarked for Ukraine in the EU’s proposed budget, asking rhetorically, “Did the financing of Ukraine change the outcome of this war?So let’s invest another 50 billion, and it doesn’t matter what happens?”
The prime minister agreed to increase Slovakia’s contribution to the EU by about €400 million over the next four years, but only if the EU could promise it would not be stolen by Kiev.
“Ukraine is among the most corrupt countries in the world and we are conditioning what is excessive financial support on guarantees that European money (including Slovak) not be embezzled,” Fico told assembled journalists.
Noting that the EU had no “peace plan” and that the leaders of several member countries had been “driven into a dead end” due to a lack of coherence on how to move forward, he said that a blank check to Ukraine would be a hard sell back home in Slovakia.
“If the strategy is to continue to pour money there, €1.5 billion per month without any result, and we have to cut our own resources? After all, we have huge problems, and public money is in a difficult state,” Fico explained.
In return for Slovakia’s increased contribution, Fico also required that there be no cuts to funds intended to support farmers, that the increased budget would be used to fight illegal immigration and increase EU competitiveness, that Slovak companies receive some of the contracts to rebuild Ukraine, and that the restoration of border infrastructure between the two nations be prioritized.
The Slovak PM is not the only EU leader who has balked at the bloc's continuing efforts to bolster Kiev financially. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban declared at the summit on Friday that the strategy of sending billions in aid had failed. “The Ukrainians will not win on the battlefield,” he said, vowing not to endorse the budget revision allocating another €50 billion.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto earlier this week condemned what he described as theEU’s “war psychosis,”accusing Brussels of planning for four years of conflict with massive arms spending, including possible military investment in Ukraine, without any funding or effort put toward resolving hostilities.

Zuckerberg's Metaverse Is Bleeding Billions of Dollars, Documents Reveal
Noor Al-Sibai
He still hasn't given up the ghost.
Losing It
Almost exactly two years ago, CEO Mark Zuckerberg changed Facebook's name to "Meta" to signal a sea change in his metaverse-focused operational priorities — and in the ensuing years, there's arguably not much to show for it besides bulky headsets, half-baked VR experiences, and tens of billions of dollars in losses.
And the losses keep piling up. In the company's Q3 earnings report, Meta reported a whopping $3.74 billion operating loss on its Reality Labs division, which has been tasked with building out Zuckerberg's vision of the metaverse.
Paired with news from over the summer that the company had recorded a $21.3 billion loss on Reality Labs since the start of 2022, Meta is clearly a long way away from turning a profit with a product that most people have no interest in using.
Notably, the 600-person Reality Labs division was subject to job cuts earlier in October, and although we don't know exactly how many people got the axe, these headlines coming in the same month certainly spell trouble.
Downhill Trend
Though there have been some significant technological advances in recent months, including a demonstration of what podcaster Lex Fridman referred to as "the first interview in the metaverse," Zuckerberg's expensive virtual reality pipe dream has thus far proven to be exactly that.
In September, for example, news dropped that Meta's Quest Pro VR headset, which went on sale for an eye-bulging $1,500 last year, was a party favor at a Roblox conference where attendees were given the goggles for free.
And whether the company's latest headset, the $500 Quest 3, which Wired called "an excellent portal to an empty metaverse," will fare any better remains to be seen.
In the first quarter of 2023, news sites rushed to publish obituaries to the metaverse after Zuckerberg appeared to switch his fealty to artificial intelligence. Half a year later, it's unclear whether those obits were premature — for one, Zuckerberg is still committed to giving his metaverse avatars legs for some reason.
But given these cumulative losses, it doesseem like his metaverse is dying a slow and expensive death.

[VIDEO]A Live Spider Found ‘Nesting’ In Woman’s Ear
Cassie Cole
This TikTok is truly the stuff of nightmares…
A woman recently shared a video on the popular social media platform, recounting a disturbing hospital visit where a live spider was discovered in her ear. Yes, you read that correctly: in her ear.
To add to the horror, doctors reported that the spider was not only in her ear but actively "nesting" there, according to her account.
In response to numerous viewer requests, the woman finally described the spider's appearance. While she didn't have an actual picture of the intruder, she did share a Google image of a small jumping spider, claiming it bore a striking resemblance to the one she found in her ear.
Incredibly, this isn't the first time the internet has exposed us to the chilling ordeal of having a spider lodged in one's ear. Just this month, a woman in Taiwan shared a similar tale to the TikTok user mentioned above.
From NBC News:
It started with a strange sensation in her left ear: the feeling of movement, followed by incessant clicking and rustling sounds.
After struggling to sleep for several nights, the 64-year-old woman in Taiwan visited an ear, nose and throat clinic. There, doctors discovered a small spider moving about her ear canal. It had discarded its exoskeleton, which sat nearby.
Doctors in April used a tube to suction out the spider and exoskeleton, according to a case report published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine.
"She didn't feel pain because the spider was very small. It's just about 2 to 3 millimeters," said Dr. Tengchin Wang, the report's co-author and the director of the otolaryngology department at Tainan Municipal Hospital. (Two-and-a-half millimeters is about one-tenth of an inch.)
After witnessing all of this, you can bet I'll be sporting a pair of earmuffs from now on.
No way I'm letting any spiders set up camp in my ears.

SCOOP: FBI Agent Reveals Smoking-Gun Evidence of Right-Wing Entrapment Operation
October 19, 2023
(Ken Silva, Headline USA) In the 1990s, the FBI ran an operation entailing undercover agents and informants posing as right-wing extremists.
Code-named Patriot Conspiracy, or PATCON, the operation was kept secret until well into the 2000s.
After being made public, FBI informant John Matthews, who was involved inPATCON, claimed in 2011 that the operation was designed to provoke right-wing groupsto violence. For their part, the Justice Department and FBI vehemently denied Matthews’s allegations, and court records about his claims are still sealed to this day.
However, anobscure bookwritten by FBI informant Dave Hall and his handler agent, Tym Burkey, provides smoking-gun evidence that corroborates Matthews’s allegations.
The book, Into the Devil’s Den—which was published in 2008, before Matthews went public—reveals that PATCON FBI informant Vince Reed attempted to get right-wing dissidents to start a domestic terrorism cell.
Indeed, on page 126 the book quotes then-Aryan Nations member Ray Redfeairn, who told the book’s co-author, Dave Hall, that he suspected that Reed was working for the feds. At the time, Redfeairn was confiding with Hall because he didn’t know Hall was also informant.
Pp“[Redfeairn] told me that Vince Reed had urged them to create the New Order==,” Hall wrote in his book. The New Order was intended to be a recreation of The Order, which was a legitimately terroristic right-wing group that robbed banks in the 1980s and was involved in the assassination of a Jewish radio host.
“[Redfeairn] repeated that he’d never trusted Reed,” the book said.
Also in the book, FBI agent Burkey confirmed that Reed was a federal informant who’d been a top Aryan Nations official since at least 2012.
The revelation that Reed was intentionally tryingto get civilians to start a right-wing terrorist groupshines new light on research by JM Berger, who wrote in 2012 that Reed was trying to help the FBI prevent—rather than incite—efforts to recreate The Order.
“The predicate for PATCON was the verbal threat against two Austin-based FBI agents … but in practice, its goals were strengthening Reed’s cover by showing he had useful allies and collecting information about rumored efforts to recreate The Order,” Berger wrote in 2012.
“PATCON would serve as a vehicle to collect evidence of the criminal activity of suspected domestic terrorism organizations such as ‘The Order,’” Berger added.
Berger has downplayed the notion that PATCON was an intentional entrapment operation. He has not responded to this report’s questions about the matter.
Berger has also been quiet about PATCON in recent years.
Whereas Berger’s early work exposed FBI malfeasance, journalistMatt Taibbi recently revealed in his Twitter Files reporting that Berger later became a contractor for the State Department’s “Global Engagement Center.” Berger created a tool that’s now being used by the GEC to push censorship on the internet, according to Taibbi.
Matthews, for his part, is unavailable because he has been off the grid since around 2014, when he was going to testify as a witness for Utah attorney Jesse Trentadue in his lawsuit against the U.S. government. Matthews changed his mind about testifying the night before he was supposed to take the stand, leading to Trentadue alleging that the FBI engaged in witness tampering and threatened Matthews.
Trentadue’s allegations have been subject of a court-appointed investigation for the last nearly eight years. The investigation has been conducted behind closed doors, with gag orders on all parties.

A spiderweb of Hamas tunnels in Gaza Strip raises risks for an Israeli ground offensive
Story by By JON GAMBRELL and ISABEL DEBRE, Associated Press • 7h
JERUSALEM (AP) — As an Israeli ground offensive in the Gaza Strip looms in its most devastating war yet with Hamas, one of the greatest threats to both its troops and the 2.3 million Palestinians trapped inside the seaside enclave is buried deep underground.
An extensive labyrinth of tunnels built by the Hamas militant group stretches across the densely populated strip, hiding fighters, their rocket arsenal and over 200 hostages they now hold after an unprecedented Oct. 7 attack on Israel.
Clearing and collapsing those tunnels will be crucial if Israel seeks to dismantle Hamas. But fighting in densely populated urban areas and moving underground could strip the Israeli military of some of its technological advantages while giving an edge to Hamas both above and below ground.
“I usually say it’s like walking down the street waiting to get punched in the face,” said John Spencer, a retired U.S. Army major and the chair of Urban Warfare Studies at the Modern War Institute at West Point.
Urban defenders, he added, “had time to think about where they are going to be and there’s millions of hidden locations they can be in. They get to choose the time of the engagement — you can’t see them but they can see you.”
Overnight on Saturday, the Israeli military said its warplanes struck 150 underground Hamas targets in northern Gaza, describing them as tunnels, combat spaces and other underground infrastructure. The strikes — what appeared to be Israel's most significant bombardment of tunnels yet — came as it ramped up its ground operations in Gaza.
WHAT THE PAST HAS SHOWN
Tunnel warfare has been a feature of history, from the Roman siege of the ancient Greek city of Ambracia to Ukrainian fighters holding off Russian forces in 24 kilometers (15 miles) of Soviet-era tunnels beneath Mariupol’s Azovstal Iron and Steel Works for some 80 days in 2022.
The reason is simple:tunnel battles are considered some of the most difficult for armies to fight. A determined enemy in a tunnel or cave system can pick where the fight will start — and often determine how it will end — given the abundant opportunities for ambush.
That's especially true in the Gaza Strip, home to Hamas’ tunnel system that Israel has named the “Metro.”
When Israel and Egypt imposed a punishing blockade on Gaza after Hamas seized control of the territory in 2007, the militant group expanded construction of its tunnel network to smuggle in weapons and other contraband from Egypt. While Egypt later shut down most of those cross-border tunnels, Hamas is now believed to have a massive underground network stretching throughout Gaza, allowing it to transport weapons, supplies and fighters out of the sight of Israeli drones.

5,000 US troops involved in Gaza offensive – Iranian media
The report by Tasnim News Agency comes as the Pentagon has moved additional military assets into the Middle East
Several thousand US troops have taken part in Israel’s ground operation in Gaza, the Iran-based Tasnim News Agency reported on Saturday. The Pentagon has recently announced plans tosignificantly reinforce its military presence in the Middle Eastamid the Israel-Hamas conflict and tensions with Iran.
According to the agency’s security sources, Israel’s assault on Gaza involved three divisions and several brigades and was also underpinned by 5,000 US military personnel. The outlet, however, did not provide any details about which troops took part in the offensive or what functions they performed.
Tasnim said that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) attempted to enter the enclave from several areas in the north, west, and southwest “to split the Gaza Strip into two or three sections and cut off the connection among the Palestinian resistance forces before launching the next stage of the war.”The agency did not specify what results the Israeli military had achieved so far.
However, Hamas said on Saturday that it had managed to thwart Israel’s assault, claiming to have repelled it with heavy losses. Meanwhile, the IDF stated that it was “advancing through the stages of the war” in Gaza, with fighting still ongoing. It noted that no soldiers had been injured in the “expanded” ground operations.
After Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel on October 7, the US military scrambled to reinforce its presence in the region. The Pentagon has sent two aircraft carriers with supporting vessels to the area, as well as “activated the deployment” of THAAD and Patriot air defense systems.
Last week, it also said it had ordered more than 2,000 additional troops to prepare to deploy in support of Israel in its conflict with Hamas. On Thursday, it said that it would deploy 900 soldiers to the Middle East. US officials, however, insisted, that none of the troops would go to Israel, and are rather “intended to support regional deterrence efforts and further bolster US force protection capabilities.”
The decision to send reinforcements also came as the US conducted airstrikes on two facilities in eastern Syria allegedly used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and affiliated groups. US President Joe Biden said it was a response to recurring attacks on US forces in Iraq and Syria. Tehran maintains that militant groups in those countries are acting independently.
