CBS Reporter Catherine Herridge Faces Contempt Charges For Refusing to Reveal Her Confidential Source

by Cristina Laila Oct. 29, 2023 3:00

CBS reporter Catherine Herridge is facing contempt charges for refusing to disclose the identity of her confidential source.

In August, US District Court for the District of Columbia, Christopher Cooper, ordered Herridge to sit down for a sworn deposition regarding a confidential source she used for a 2017 story she covered onaDepartment of Defense-funded school that was at the center of federal investigations over Chinese military ties while she was at Fox News.

The judge ordered Herridge to turn over her source(s) in response to a lawsuit that was filed by Chinese-American scientist Yanping Chen against the FBI. Chen subpoenaed Herridge in an effort to find out who her sources were.

Herridge argued she should not be forced to disclose her source because of her First Amendment rights.

Judge Cooper, an Obama appointee, disagreed and forced Herridge to unmask her source.

“The Court recognizes both the vital importance of a free press and the critical role that confidential sources play in the work of investigative journalists like Herridge,” Cooper wrote in the ruling in August. “But applying the binding case law of this Circuit, theCourt concludes that Chen’s need for the requested evidence overcomes Herridge’s qualified First Amendment privilege in this case.”(so a Chinese spy in our government has more rights the Freedom of the press?Same thing happened to Catherine Englebrecht and Gregg Phillips, this is how you know America is in decline so severe that it must be stopped now)

Herridge refused to disclose her source during the deposition and now she faces contempt charges and potential jail time, The Epoch Times reported.

“With contempt proceedings now teed up, one of two outcomes appears likely: either Herridge will be held in contempt in the near future and can immediately appeal that order, or, as sometimes occurs in these cases, the sources may release Herridge from the privilege rather than watch her undergo the consequences of contempt,” Judge Cooper wrote in an order on Friday.

Excerpt from The Epoch Times:

A reporter who was with Fox News when she reported on information provided by a confidential source is facing a contempt charge because she’s refusing to reveal the source’s identity despite a court order that she do so.

Catherine Herridge, now a reporter for CBS News, was ordered in Augusttodisclose the identity and motive of the source, who provided information about an FBI investigation into a Chinese scientist.

But Ms. Herridge, during a deposition after the order was handed down, “refused to answer questions regarding the identity of her confidential source(s) and other aspects of her reporting process and editorial decision-making,” lawyers for Yanping Chen, the scientist, said in a recent filing.

They asked the court to hold Ms. Herridge in contempt, a criminal charge that can bring jail time.

U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper, who gave the order, said on Oct. 27 that Ms. Herridge would likely be held in contempt unless she provided the information.

Russian Muslim leader explains ‘Allahu Akbar’ usage

Ismail Berdiev has criticized protesters for mixing praise of the Almighty with profanities

The head of the Muslim Coordination Center in Russia’s North Caucasus, Ismail Berdiev, has condemned the rioters who targeted an airport in Dagestan on Sunday, accusing them of using the term ‘Allahu Akbar’ in an unacceptable way.

Dagestani capital Makhachkala was the scene of unrest when pro-Palestinian protesters broke into the local airport looking for alleged refugees from Israel.

In an interview with RIA Novosti on Monday, Berdiev criticized the rioters, noting that “extolling the Almighty byshouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ is appropriate only when there is a sound reason for it.”

He added that religious holidays, prayers, or family celebrations were suitable occasions, but that praising Allah “during illegal marches and demonstrations, as happened during the storming of the airport in Makhachkala, [is] unacceptable.”

Berdiev also noted that rioters had used exclamations of religious praise alongside “blasphemous words”that are forbidden in Islam. “The faithful are barred from uttering profanities. A Muslim must control his actions and not shoot off the mouth, thereby setting a bad example for his brothers,” he insisted.

Berdiev’s comments came after hundreds of protesters gathered outside Makhachkala Airport on Sunday, later breaking into the facility and blocking the runway. They then boarded planes in search of “Jewish refugees”allegedly fleeing their homeland following the attack by Palestinian armed group Hamas earlier this month.

The unrest at the airport led to clashes with police, resulting in several officers being injured and dozens of protesters being detained. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov suggested that the riots had “obviously” been influenced by foreign forces, and stressed that Russian President Vladimir Putin was paying close attention to the issue.

The head of Dagestan, Sergey Melikov, alleged thatUkrainian nationalists were trying to destabilize the situation in the republic by fomenting ethnic and religious divisions through social mediachannels. He also vowed that those responsible for the rioting would be held accountable, suggesting that they could atone by joining Russian forces fighting Ukraine.

Ukraine aid failing to create jobs in US – NBC

The Biden administration is trying to reframe unprecedented military assistance to Kiev as an economic opportunity

The unprecedented flow of US taxpayer dollars to Ukraine over the past two years has not translated to new jobs or gains for Americans, according to NBC News.

While over $44 billion has been funneled to US defense contractors under the banner of military aid for Kiev since February of last year, those companies have been slow to hire American workers to help with the increased demand, the news outlet reported on Saturday.

Defense industry analysts predicted that it will take “several more years” for arms manufacturers to reach production levels that trickle down to the wider economy, citing supply chain issues, a tight labor market, and a dysfunctional boom-and-bust system that does not allow for sustained output.

RTX Corp., formerly Raytheon, complained about issues finding both raw materials and qualified employees in an earnings report released Tuesday. While the company recently netted a $3 billion contract to replenish the US’ depleted weapons stockpiles and expects another $4 billion over the next two years, CEO Greg Hayes acknowledged to investors that it would take two or even three years to deliver the goods.

Lockheed Martin similarly predicted a negligible uptick in revenue for 2023 despite surging demand for its Javelin and HIMARS missile systems in Ukraine. The company hired 2,000 people last year and claims to have 900 openings in its missile and fire control division, but just 40 of those were located at the factory where it manufactures the systems being sent to Ukraine, it told NBC.

While General Dynamics has seen more orders at its Combat Systems unit than it has in years thanks to robust demand for tank and artillery shells in Ukraine (so much that it is even building a new plant in Texas to make more shell casings), that whole plant will employ just 125 workers.

These numbers appear to contradict President Joe Biden’s suggestion last week that the $61.4 billion more in military aid he wants for Ukraine effectively amounts to a job-creation program for Americans.

“When we use the money allocated by Congress, we use it to replenish our own stores, our own stockpiles with new equipment, equipment that defends America and is made in America,” Biden claimed during a televised address, pointing to “Patriot missiles for air defense batteries made in Arizona, artillery shells manufactured in 12 states across the country… and so much more.”

White House aides have reportedly been distributing similar talking points to representatives from both parties, Politico reported on Wednesday, citing several sources involved in the messaging.

The Pentagon revealed earlier this month that billions of dollars in additional funding is needed to replenish US weapons stocks while continuing to fund Ukraine's and now Israel's military. Its latest announcement of a new aid package for Kiev earlier this week also contained the new White House talking points about how aid to Ukraine is “a smart investment” that strengthens the US military industrial base and creates “highly skilled jobs for the American people.”

Just think about that

Pistorius brushed off criticism thatChancellor Olaf Scholz’s government has been too slow to build up the German armed forces, claiming that they are working as rapidly as possible to make up for 30 years of neglect and underfunding. The minister promised that the Bundeswehr would be unrecognizable in three or four years’ time, and suggested that the German military is already among the strongest in NATO and Europe.

Zelensky ‘feels betrayed’ by West – Time

The Ukrainian president said that the conflict has “become like a show” to the Western public

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky feels “betrayed” by his Western backers, who have denied him the support and attention he has grown used to his aidestold Time magazine. According to the report, the president’s circle now see him as “delusional” and the conflict with Russia as impossible to win.

Zelensky and his advisors spoke to the US magazine after the Ukrainian president visited Washington last month. Unlike the hero’s welcome he received last December, the most recent visit saw Zelensky grilled about corruption in Ukraine and forbidden from addressing lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

Despite US President Joe Biden’s pledge to support Kiev “for as long as it takes,”Congress has failed to agree on a new aid bill for Ukraine. Ten days after Zelensky returned to Kiev from Washington, lawmakers managed to pass a spending bill to avert a government shutdown, but only after stripping $6 billion in Ukraine funding from it.

“Zelensky feels betrayed by his Western allies. They have left him without the means to win the war, only the means to survive it,” Time wrote, citing a member of his team.

“The scariest thing is that part of the world got used to the war in Ukraine,” Zelensky said. “Exhaustion with the war rolls along like a wave. You see it in the United States, in Europe. And we see that as soon as they start to get a little tired, it becomes like a show to them: ‘I can’t watch this rerun for the 10th time’.”

Zelensky told Time that he still believes that his forces can defeat Russia on the battlefield, and that he will not entertain any negotiations with Moscow, despite Ukraine’s summer counteroffensive failing to achieve its objectives and resulting in what the magazine called “enormous losses.” According to the most recent Russian figures, the Ukrainian military lost more than 90,000 men between early June and the beginning of this month.

“He deludes himself,” one of Zelensky’s closest aides told Time. “We’re out of options. We’re not winning. But try telling him that.”

The outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war has drawn the attention of the West away from Kiev in recent weeks, with the Pentagon surging troops and weapons to the Middle East and US House Speaker Mike Johnson prioritizing a vote on military aid to the Jewish state instead of Ukraine.

“It’s logical,” Zelensky told Time, adding that while “the world’s help is needed” in Israel, “we lose out.”

Legendary Flatiron Building To Be Converted To Luxury Residential Condos And Rentals

BY TYLER DURDEN

MONDAY, OCT 30, 2023 - 06:55 AM

With its only commercial tenant out, the legendary Flatiron Building at 175 Fifth Avenue is being converted into luxury housing.

The building has recently "fallen on hard times", including seeing its only office tenant, Macmillan Publishers, move out before Covid, according to a report by The New York Times. This has prompted the building's owners to redevelop the property.

A buyer had previously won an auction for the building back in March, but never showed up when it was time to cut the check. This past week, residential developer the Brodsky Organization bought a stake in the building and will lead the conversion according to the Times.

The triangle-shaped building will now feature condominiums or rentals. Dean Amro, a principal at the Brodsky Organization, says he believes the project shows the company's "confidence in New York coming back even stronger than before.”

Sure, as long as you're not talking about commercial real estate…

But we digress. The project is slated to take about 3 years, according to the Times. Approval from the Department of City Planning could take as much as a year, while demolition and construction would take up to two years.

Plans are still in flux, but roughly 40 residential units are under consideration, while the ground floor will remain retail. Real estate expert Jonathan J. Miller believes the shift aligns well with the stagnant office market and sees potential for the project to succeed as a residential landmark.

Since Macmillan's departure in 2019, the Flatiron's upper floors have remained vacant, and a court-ordered sale occurred earlier this year due to previous ownership disputes over renovation plans. The Flatiron district itself is among Manhattan's priciest and most coveted residential areas.

Jeff Gural, an office developer who was the Flatiron’s majority interest holder, had hoped to maintain some of the office space in the building. But he eventually conceded that "current economic conditions" made it clear that the building would be "better suited for residences".

Which is, of course, a nice way of saying, even commercial real estate developers don't want to be in the business of commercial real estate right now…

He concluded: “There are going to be 40 people who want to live in the Flatiron Building.”

Joe Biden’s Big New Hampshire Blunder

By attempting to reorder the primary calendar, the president set himself up for a rude awakening in January.

10/30/2023 05:00 AM EDT

I talked to Lang at a Republican candidate forum in Nashua, the sort that Trump never attends, in which at least one top surrogate introduced his preferred candidate by reminding the GOP voters in attendance of who is campaigning the Granite State way.

“Nobody honors the First In The Nation primary more than Nikki Haley,” said retired Gen. Don Bolduc, citing the former South Carolina governor’s many town hall meetings in his introduction of Haley.

It all may sound like so much self-absorption from a state clinging to a fading tradition, never mind that Iowa and New Hampshire were already becoming soundstages for increasingly nationalized primaries.

Yet I’ve covered enough races here to know that, as Duprey put it, “New Hampshire voters like you to show up.”

Phillips intends to do that and began his campaign vowing to break McCain’s record of total town halls held, an ambitious goal for the two and a half months before New Hampshire’s likely mid-to-late January primary date.

As with McCain’s 2000 campaign, Phillips intends to offer extensive press access. And as he rolled with a group of reporters and photographers on his new campaign bus, already decorated with his father’s old baseball glove and a stack of books including J. William Fulbright’s “The Arrogance of Power,” he offered a preview of what he intends to tell New Hampshire voters.

“There’s a culture of civic engagement in this state that I think is unique,” Phillips said. “People literally commit to vetting the very candidates that the rest of the country will soon be considering. It doesn’t mean that the other states don’t matter, they matter just as much. But the tradition is we start here.”

As for Biden’s decision to try to push back New Hampshire, he said it amounted to an attempt to “disenfranchise” New Hampshire’s voters.

“We’ve seen a lot of leaders in this country who like to change the rules when the rules don’t suit them,” said Phillips.
