Why doesn the Vatican have a special Secretary of State Department for "The Jews"?

THE JEWS ARCHIVAL SERIES

OF THE CONGREGATION OF ECCLESIASTICAL AFFAIRS EXTRAORDINARY COLLECTION

[ EN - IT ]

The Ebrei series (โ€œJewsโ€) of the Historical Archive of the Secretariat of State, Section for Relations with States and International Organizations (ASRS) is part of the Congregazione degli Affairi Ecclesiastici Straordinari (AA.EE.SS) Collection, which pertains to the pontificate of Pius XII โ€’ Part I (1939โ€’1948).

It differs from the other series in that it was not designated under the name of a geographical subject with which the Holy See established and maintained diplomatic ties. Instead, it collected petitions for assistance sent by Jews, baptized and unbaptized, from all over Europe to Pope Pius XII after the start of Nazi-Fascist persecution.

Thus, the then Congregatio pro negotiis ecclesiasticis extraordinariis (currently the Section for Relations with States and International Organizations of the Secretariat of State), equivalent to a Ministry of Foreign Affairs, tasked a diplomatic official (Msgr. Angelo Dell'Acqua) with handling these petitions in an effort to provide the petitioners with all possible assistance.

Each petition became a file (or dossier) in the name of the primary applicant(s) and was meant for preservation with the archival classification โ€œEbreiโ€ (Jews). These files were placed in alphabetical order according to the surname in the header, inside a heavier paper folder marked with the corresponding letter of the alphabet.

The petitions, which are sometimes submitted by a mediator, could be for obtaining visas or passports for expatriation, asylum, reunification with a family member, release from detention, transfers from one concentration camp to another, news about a deported person, food or clothing, financial support, and spiritual support, among other things. Unfortunately, as can be seen from documentation, many requests could not be accepted due to various types of problems. Other times, the recovery has been successful, but in most cases the outcome remains unknown.

Various dossiers, including requests for assistance from Jews, can still be found in other series of the Congregazione degli Affari Ecclesiastici Straordinari Collection's archival records. Following the creation of the โ€œEbreiโ€ series, certain dossiers were extrapolated from the original series and included in the latter, as shown by the previous archival classification, written in pen in the bottom inner corner of the original folder's back, which has been crossed out and replaced in some instances by the classification โ€œEbreiโ€. However, numerous of these documents are still preserved in their original archival series (e.g., in Italia, Pos. 1054 and Stati Ecclesiastici, Pos. 575).
