World War III has already started – Russian foreign-policy expert

The new global war comes as a series of intertwined conflicts rather than a single, major one, Fyodor Lukyanov believes

The Third World War is already underway, Fyodor Lukyanov, Russia’s leading foreign policy expert, has said. A world order that has been “unpleasant” but “manageable” is being broken down and currently there seems to be no mechanism for the resolution of conflicts, including the ongoing escalation between Israel and Hamas, he believes.

Lukyanov, who is chairman of the presidium at think tank Council for Foreign and Defense Policy (SVOP) and editor-in-chief of magazine Russia in Global Affairs, made the remarks in an interview published last week by newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda.

Of late, the world has been seen old, frozen conflicts getting re-ignited, Lukyanov said, listing as examples the Nagorno-Karabakh hostilities, the Russia-Ukraine standoff and the new escalation in the Middle East.

The ongoing array of conflicts is effectively the new World War, which appears to significantly differ from the two global conflicts of the 20th century, Lukyanov, who is also a research director of the Valdai International Discussion Club, suggested.

There is a chain of conflicts affecting the whole world. In fact, World War III is already underway. In this sense, it is still better than the wars that happened in the 20th century, but there is little joy.

“We instinctively expect that the war will begin just like the Great War or the [Second World War]. But such wars probably won’t happen anymore – after all, there are nuclear weapons, which are still holding back many,” the expert said.

The escalation in the Middle East is not the last conflict to come, with more hostilities expected to break out worldwide soon – and no one seems to be capable now of stopping them, he also warned.

“The international order is breaking down. It was an unpleasant one, based on the fear of mutual destruction, but manageable. Wars in the Middle East have erupted before, but the USSR and the USA intervened and extinguished them until the next conflict. And now I don’t see even a temporary settlement mechanism,” Lukyanov said. He noted that the Palestinian militant group Hamas has apparently picked the “right” moment to strike against Israel, given that the country has experienced “permanent internal chaos” for over a year already.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken raised quite a few eyebrows on Monday, after choosing to dress his kids up in “pro-Ukrainian” costumes to attend President Joe Biden’s traditional White House Halloween party on Monday.

While the senior diplomat and his wife attended without any special outfits, they dressed their son in a green sweatshirt and khaki pants, nearly identical to those often worn by Ukrainian president Vladimir Zelensky.

Their daughter, meanwhile, was dressed in a blue dress with a yellow shawl, apparently meant to resemble a Ukrainian flag.

President Joe Biden, who handed out candy to the children, was also without a costume. First Lady Jill Biden, however, was dressed as a cat.

While some online thought that the Blinkens’ decision to dress their kids as symbols of Ukraine was “cute” and indicative of limitless US support for Kiev, others described the gesture as “creepy” and a “clown show,” pointing out the irony of using a Zelensky costume to ask for candy.

Top Zelenskyy Adviser Admits the Truth About Corruption in Ukraine: ‘People Are Stealing Like There’s No Tomorrow’

People at the highest levels of Ukraine’s government are lining their pockets with cash as U.S. taxpayers prepare to fund yet another year of that nation’s war against Russia, an adviser to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

Time magazine published a lengthy story on Monday about reporter Simon Shuster’s recent visit to the war-torn country in which he shared insights he said he gained into the morale of those leading Ukraine nearly two years after Russia invaded it.

According to an unnamed senior adviser to Zelenskyy, people at the top are “stealing” like there is no tomorrow and Ukraine’s president faces pressure to root out corruption as its allies continue to give the country everything it asks for.

Shuster followed Zelenskyy back to Ukraine after he and his closest advisers visited the U.S. in September.

He commented that Ukraine’s president “can feel during his travels that global interest in the war has slackened. So has the level of international support.”

The reporter also spoke to an adviser who said that in spite of some internal housecleaning in the Zelenskyy Cabinet, theft is rampant.

“Amid all the pressure to root out corruption, I assumed, perhaps naively, that officials in Ukraine would think twice before taking a bribe or pocketing state funds,” Shuster wrote.

“But when I made this point to a top presidential adviser in early October, he asked me to turn off my audio recorder so he could speak more freely. ‘Simon, you’re mistaken,’ he says. ‘People are stealing like there’s no tomorrow.'”

While Zelenskyy fired numerous Defense Ministry officials this year to change a perception that corruption was widespread, the adviser told Shuster that people behind the corruption did not “feel any fear” about facing consequences for misusing government funds as Ukraine relies on international aid.

Shutter added, “By the time [Zelenskyy] acted ahead of his U.S. visit, ‘it was too late,’ says another senior presidential adviser. Ukraine’s Western allies were already aware of the scandal by then.

House Republicans under newly minted Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), as well as a group of Senate Republicans, want Israel aid separated from Ukraine aid, while the Biden White House wants to jam a $105 billion foreign aid package ($14B to Israel, $60B to Ukraine) through Congress.

The House's plan (if they can even pass it) to separate Israel aid from Ukraine aid is DOA in the Senate, while both the Senate's combined package and the Biden admin's package is DOA in the House.

The House and the Senate also need to pass 12 appropriations measures for 2024, or face a 1% across-the-board cut on defense and nondefense spending, per the debt ceiling bill passed earlier this year.

Twenty-Six Journalists Killed in Gaza Since October 7

Four Israeli journalists were killed in the Hamas attack and one Reuters journalist was killed in Lebanon

At least 26 Palestinian journalists have been killed in Gaza since Israel unleashed its bombing campaign on the besieged enclave in response to the October 7 Hamas attack, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said on Monday.

The majority of the Palestinian journalists were killed by Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, with three reported being shot dead on October 7. The CPJ said four Israeli journalists were killed in the Hamas attack. A Reuters journalist was killed by Israeli shelling in Lebanon on October 13.

For comparison, the CPJ has reported that 15 journalists have been killed in Ukraine since Russia launched its invasion in February 2022.

The staggering journalist death toll in Gaza reflects the massive civilian casualties in Israeli airstrikes. Gaza’s Health Ministry said on Sunday that at least 8,306 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli onslaught, including 3,457 children.

President Biden has accused the Palestinians of lying about the death toll, but Gaza’s Health Ministry is considered reliable, and the numbers reflect the massive number of bombs Israel has dropped on the enclave. UN officials told The Wall Street Journal that they believe the death toll is likely much higher since it doesn’t include people still under the rubble.

French Minister says Paris will deport 39 Russians

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin told French broadcaster RMC radio on October 30 that Paris plans to deport 39 Russian citizens who, according to French officials, are followers of radical Islam.

It is not clear whether four teenagers, including three from Russia’s North Caucasus regions of Chechnya and Ingushetia, who were detained last week on suspicion of planning an attack at the Israeli Embassy in Paris are among those designated for deportation.
