Zoroastrianism[a] is an Iranian religion and one of the world's oldest organized faiths, based on the teachings of the Iranian-speaking prophet Zoroaster.[2][3] It has a dualistic cosmology of good and evil within the framework of a monotheistic ontology[4] and an eschatology which predicts the ultimate conquest of evil by good.
Additionally, the life force that originates from Ahura Mazda, known as Asha (truth, cosmic order),[6][22] stands in opposition to Druj (falsehood, deceit). [23][24] Ahura Mazda is considered to be all-good with no evil emanating from the deity.[6] Ahura Mazda works in gētīg (the visible material realm) and mēnōg (the invisible spiritual and mental realm)[25] through the seven (six when excluding Spenta Mainyu) Amesha Spentas.[26]
Humata, Huxta, Huvarshta (Good Thoughts, Good Words, Good Deeds), the Threefold Path of Asha, is considered the core maxim of Zoroastrianism especially by modern practitioners. In Zoroastrianism, good transpires for those who do righteous deeds for its own sake, not for the search of reward. Those who do evil are said to be attacked and confused by the druj and are responsible for aligning themselves back to Asha by following this path.[43]
In Zoroastrianism, Ahura Mazda is the beginning and the end, the creator of everything that can and cannot be seen, the eternal and uncreated, the all-good and source of Asha.[6] In the Gathas, the most sacred texts of Zoroastrianism thought to have been composed by Zoroaster himself, Zoroaster acknowledged the highest devotion to Ahura Mazda, with worship and adoration also given to Ahura Mazda's manifestations (Amesha Spenta) and the other ahuras (Yazata) that support Ahura Mazda.
Zoroastrians have been criticized by Muslim authors for their rejection of predestination.[29][30] This follows a famous hadith of Muhammad in which he negatively associates the Qadariyah Islamic sect with the Magians.
Ahreman (Persian: ) is the Avestan name of Zoroastrianism's hypostasis of the "destructive/evil spirit" and the main adversary in Zoroastrianism either of the Spenta Mainyu, the "holy/creative spirits/mentality", or directly of Ahura Mazda, the highest deity of Zoroastrianism. The Middle Persian equivalent is Ahriman 𐭠𐭧𐭫𐭬𐭭𐭩 (anglicised pronunciation: /ˈɑːrɪmən/). The name can appear in English-language works as Ahrimanes.
Ayn al-Quzat Hamadani asserts that evil exists relational to humans, but always serves a greater purpose. In accordance with tawhid, God is the ultimate source of good and evil.[26]
"This is our main quarrel with the Magians (Zoroastrians). They say there are two Gods: the creator of good and the creator of evil. Show me good without evil – then I will admit there is a God of evil and a God of good. This is impossible, for good cannot exist without evil. Since there is no separation between them, how can there be two creators?"
