Khazarian Jew Study

Abstract

The question of Jewish ancestry has been the subject of controversy for over two centuries and has yet to be resolved. The “Rhineland hypothesis” depicts Eastern European Jews as a “population isolate” that emerged from a small group of German Jews who migrated eastward and expanded rapidly. Alternatively, the “Khazarian hypothesis” suggests that Eastern European Jews descended from the Khazars, an amalgam of Turkic clans that settled the Caucasus in the early centuries CE and converted to Judaism in the 8th century. Mesopotamian and Greco–Roman Jews continuously reinforced the Judaized empire until the 13th century. Following the collapse of their empire, the Judeo–Khazars fled to Eastern Europe. The rise of European Jewry is therefore explained by the contribution of the Judeo–Khazars. Thus far, however, the Khazars’ contribution has been estimated only empirically, as the absence of genome-wide data from Caucasus populations precluded testing the Khazarian hypothesis. Recent sequencing of modern Caucasus populations prompted us to revisit the Khazarian hypothesis and compare it with the Rhineland hypothesis. We applied a wide range of population genetic analyses to compare these two hypotheses. Our findings support the Khazarian hypothesis and portray the European Jewish genome as a mosaic of Near Eastern-Caucasus, European, and Semitic ancestries, thereby consolidating previous contradictory reports of Jewish ancestry. We further describe a major difference among Caucasus populations explained by the early presence of Judeans in the Southern and Central Caucasus. Our results have important implications for the demographic forces that shaped the genetic diversity in the Caucasus and for medical studies.

Ohio Conducts Statewide Simulation of Anthrax Attack

Public safety, health, and emergency management agencies across the state of Ohio came together recently to conduct a three-day anthrax attack simulation.

The simulation was conducted at the Historic Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio and consisted of emergency responders dressed in layers of personal protective equipment, testing anthrax in mock exercises.

Ohio Department of Health Director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff shared, “Exercises like this allow us to evaluate our ongoing readiness and make adjustments that we may find are necessary based on that experience, and it’s all with an eye towards best protecting the people of Ohio.”

NSW woman wins High Court bid to overturn permanent stay in case against Catholic church over alleged historical child sexual abuse

A New South Wales woman hoping to sue the Catholic Diocese of Lismore for negligence in a sexual abuse claim has won her High Court bid to overturn a permanent stay on the case.

Key points:

A woman who says she was abused by a priest in 1968 has won a High Court bid allowing her to sue the Catholic church

A New South Wales Court of Appeal previously ruled the case would not go to trial, and granted a permanent stay

A permanent stay means the case is discontinued

The woman, known as GLJ, says she was abused by Father Clarence Anderson in her family home in 1968, when she was 14.

She alleges the church knew of Anderson's abuse of other children at the time, and is vicariously liable.

Anderson died in 1996, and the church had previously said it could not get a fair trial because of the absence of records and the deaths of relevant witnesses.

Today, the High Court ordered a New South Wales Court of Appeal ruling made last year imposing the stay — which meant that the case could not progress in the courts — be set aside.

That means that GLJ is free to pursue legal proceedings against the Catholic Church, and gives hope to other cases stalled by a stay.

"GLJ is obviously extremely relieved and delighted and would like to thank the court and her legal team for assisting her to this outcome," her team said in a statement.

"GLJ hopes this landmark decision will also be able to help others right across Australia to bring their claims before courts in spite of the Catholic church again seeking to mount technical legal defences to their claims."

Anderson was ordained in 1963 and spent time in the parishes of Lismore, Kyogle, Tweed Heads and Macksville before his dispensation from the priesthood in 1971.
