AFP blocks 10 child abuse websites and tracks thousands of predators who accessed them
The AFP has proactively identified and blocked 10 child abuse websites hosted on domains associated with the Cocos Keeling Islands that were responsible for the distribution of almost one million child abuse images and videos.
Since access to the sites was disrupted on 10 October 2023, AFP investigators have recorded tens of thousands of attempted visits from around the world.
The IP addresses and identities of those who visited these sites from another country will be referred to the relevant law enforcement agency in that country to identify offenders and support criminal investigations.
Access to the sites was blocked as a result of an investigation which was launched in 2022, when the AFP was alerted by the Shire of Cocos Keeling Islands to multiple websites containing child abuse material associated with the Australian territory. The websites’ URLs ended with ‘.cc’, which is the top-level domain (TLD) for the Cocos Keeling Islands.
The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), an international not-for-profit agency combatting child abuse, has flagged the Cocos Keeling Islands TLD as one of the top 10 TLDs worldwide associated with the distribution of child abuse material.
Officers from the AFP-led Joint Policing Cybercrime Coordination Centre (JPC3), and Cocos Keeling Islands, along with the Shire of Cocos Keeling Islands, the office of the eSafety Commissioner, the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts and the top level domain administrator worked together to remove access to the sites identified as mostly hosting child abuse material.
Visitors to these sites will now see a ‘takedown notice’ issued by the AFP and cannot access previously-hosted child exploitation material.
An investigation is ongoing to identify the administrators, contributors and users of the websites involved.
AFP acting Commander Cybercrime Tim Stainton said viewing or sharing child abuse material was not a victimless crime.
“These videos and images show real children being exploited, physically harmed and traumatised for the perverse gratification of offenders. Each time these files are shared it perpetuates the harm caused to these children,” a/Commander Stainton said.
“Australian domain names should not, and will not, be a safe haven for this kind of horrible content.
“The AFP will use every tool in its arsenal, from website takedowns to seizing servers and arresting those who provide, access or distribute the material, to help keep children safe.
“We will be working to identify the people responsible for creating these sites as well as those who accessed them.”
eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said child sexual exploitation material can be found in all corners of the internet and Australians should report it to eSafety if they ever see it.
“With our partners in law enforcement, we continue to chip away at one of the most distressing and abhorrent violations of human rights: the sexual abuse of children,” eSafety Commissioner Inman Grant said.

US regime change activist named Web Summit CEO after founder forced out for condemning Israeli ‘war crimes’
The CEO of one of the world’s leading tech conferences was forced to resign after criticizing Israel’s assault on Gaza. He was quickly replaced by one of the industry’s most prominent US government-affiliated regime change specialists.
Europe’s biggest tech conference, Web Summit, has appointed a veteran US regime-change operative named Katherine Maher as its new CEO, just days after founder Paddy Cosgrave stepped down from the position following an industry-wide backlash to his suggestion that Israel forces have carried out “war crimes” in their ongoing assault of Gaza.
Cosgrave’s future at Web Summit had been in doubt since October 13, when he sparked pro-Israel outrage after tweeting that “war crimes are war crimes even when committed by allies.” Industrial and tech behemoths including Siemens, Intel, Amazon, Meta and Google subsequently declared that they wouldn’t be attending this year’s conference, which is slated to take place in Lisbon, Portugal from November 13 to 16.

In a statement published October 30, Web Summit’s new CEO, Katherine Maher, said that in recent weeks, the company’s “purpose was overshadowed by the personal comments of the event’s founder and former CEO, Paddy Cosgrave.” But she insisted that “today Web Summit is entering its next phase.”
If Maher’s recent corporate experience is any indication, that “next phase” will be decidedly less adversarial in its relationship with Western governments and tech juggernauts. A telegenic 40-year-old internet activist, Maher has occupied positions at the Council on Foreign Relations, the Atlantic Council, and the National Democratic Institute, a US intelligence cutout.
As The Grayzone reported, she eventually rose to CEO of the Wikimedia Foundation and helped preside over the transformation of Wikipedia — once branded a “people’s encyclopedia” — into an information weapon wielded by the national security establishment.
In 2017, Maher participated in a special event hosted by the US State Department and entitled “Wikipedia in a Post-Fact World.”

Israeli Jets Strike Turkish-run Cancer Hospital in Gaza Strip
Israeli war jets have damaged the Gaza Strip's only hospital for cancer patients, the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital, amid Israel's ongoing bombing campaign in Gaza.
The Gaza Strip’s only hospital for cancer treatment was damaged after it was struck by Israeli war jets, the hospital’s director said Monday.
The Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital in Gaza was attacked for a second time since Israel’s relentless bombing campaign on the besieged Gaza Strip began on 7 October.
The hospital’s cancer patients were left in a “state of panic”, the hospital’s director general, Dr. Subhi Skaik, said on Facebook.
“A state of panic afflicts cancer patients and medical staff as a result of the heavy Israeli bombardment of the only Turkish Friendship Hospital for cancer patients in the Gaza Strip and the infliction of severe damage to it as a result of the Israeli occupation repeatedly targeting its surroundings,” Dr Skaik said.
“The [Israeli forces] not only increased the suffering and pain of cancer patients and deprived them of medicines and travel for treatment abroad, but it now endangered their lives by targeting the hospital surroundings,” he added.
In separate comments to the Turkish news agency Anadolu, Dr. Skaik said that the Israeli air strikes hit the third floor of the hospital building causing “extensive damage, as a fire broke out in the floor before being contained”.
