Sen. Chuck Grassley: Drones Carrying Explosives Are Latest Threat to US Border Security

NOVEMBER 4, 2023

Senator Chuck Grassley has raised concerns about the potential threat of drones rigged with explosives, similar to those used by Hamas against Israeli civilians, along the southern border.

After a group of Republican senators disclosed that explosives tailored for terrorism were found in the possession of some illegal border crossers, Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) is drawing attention to the potential national security risk posed by drones carrying bombs.

In a letter to Steven Dettelbach, the director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), Grassley highlighted the issue, sending similar letters to other agencies, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) unit.

Grassley pointed to Mexican cartels’ use of weaponized drones for targeted assassinations, violent attacks by dropping explosives in Mexico, monitoring U.S. Border Patrol agents and other law enforcement officers, and tracking the progress of smugglers entering the U.S.

He also referred to Hamas’s use of armed drones in attacks on Israeli communities, resulting in the deaths of mostly civilians. Grassley emphasized the need to secure the U.S. border against such national security threats.

Apart from Hamas, Lebanon’s Hezbollah claimed to have used explosives-packed drones to target an Israeli army command position on the Lebanon-Israel border. The escalating violence between Hezbollah and Israeli forces coincided with Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza.

Iran-backed militias have also intensified their attacks against U.S. forces in the Middle East due to U.S. support for Israel.

Grassley pointed out that there have been reports suggesting that Hamas and Hezbollah operatives might attempt to enter the United States through the porous U.S.-Mexico border and carry out attacks on U.S. soil.

In light of increased terror threats to the United States, FBI Director Christopher Wray emphasized that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East had raised the risk of attacks against Americans within the country.

Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) and a group of Republican senators expressed concerns about President Joe Biden’s border policy, citing cases where Border Patrol agents apprehended illegal border crossers carrying improvised explosive devices designed for terrorism.

Senator Grassley has now added his voice to the growing concerns about terror threats to the United States and emphasized the need to secure the southern border against potential dangers.

In addition, FBI Director Wray warned lawmakers that the terror threat to the United States had increased during the Israel-Hamas conflict and revealed that Iran had attempted to hire assassins to murder U.S. government officials on American soil, indicating a growing national security concern.
