Kiev dismantles symbol of Nazi defeat

The city authorities have removed a Soviet golden star from a monument commemorating the Ukrainian capital’s role in the Soviet fight against the Third Reich

The Ukrainian authorities in Kiev have partially dismantled a monument commemorating the Soviet victory over the Nazi Germany and the role the city played in that struggle.

Photos and videos that surfaced on social media and published by some Ukrainian news outlets on Saturday showed city workers disassembling and removing a golden star crowning the 40-meter-tall monument.

The golden star on the monument resembled the Hero of the Soviet Union order – the highest military award in the USSR. The monument dedicated “to the hero city of Kiev”was designed to commemorate the honorary title the city received for the outstanding heroism of its defenders and residents in the fight against the Nazis during World War II. A total of twelve Soviet cities received such titles.

The monument itself was erected in 1982 and was located on Victory Square, a name that was given in 1952 to honor the war. Earlier this year, the Ukrainian authorities renamed it Galitskaya Square.

The monument’s partial dismantling has become the latest episode of a long-running campaign by the Ukrainian authorities to remove all traces of the Soviet Union, and by extension, erase ties with Russia.

The campaign was launched as early as in 2015, when Ukraine adopted its so-called ‘decommunization law’, which banned Soviet-related symbols and led to the mass removal of monuments and the renaming of hundreds of places across the country. The legislation did make an exception for WWII landmarks.

However, after the start of the conflict between Moscow and Kiev, the Ukrainian authorities redoubled their ‘decommunization’ efforts and this time did not spare WWII-related monuments.

In August, the Soviet coat of arms was removed from the iconic Motherland Monument. The 102-meter-tall landmark towering over the Dnieper River, held a 16-meter-long sword in its right hand and a shield emblazoned with the hammer and sickle, the Soviet coat of arms, in its left. Inaugurated in 1981 by Ukrainian-born Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev, it is the fifth-tallest statue in the world and the tallest monument in the country.

The overhaul involved replacing the Soviet coat of arms with Ukraine’s golden trident. The Ukrainian Culture Ministry released a video showing part of the work being carried out. The monument itself was then renamed as ‘Ukraine-Mother’.

A public poll conducted in Ukraine in late August suggested, however, that some two thirds of Ukrainians considered the move ill-timed and said that the money allocated for the job could have been better spent elsewhere. Ukrainian Minister of Culture Alexandr Tkachenko estimated in mid-July that the overhaul would cost 28 million hryvnia ($755,000), adding that it was financed through private donations.

We won’t talk to Russia – Zelensky

Kiev will not make any concession to Moscow, the Ukrainian president has said

Ukraine is not willing to hold any talks with Russia, President Vladimir Zelensky said on Saturday during a joint press conference with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. He also denied recent media reports that Kiev’s Western backers are pushing it to engage in negotiations.

“Now, none of the EU, US leaders, our partners are putting pressure on us in terms of sitting down [at the negotiating table] with Russia, talking to it or surrendering something to it,” he told journalists. “This is not going to happen,” he added. (Famous last words)

Zelensky then said he “does not know” who even publishes such reports. He did admit, however, that he had “got an impression” that the Ukrainian media and Ukrainians themselves are speculating about the idea of potential talks with Russia and about Western nations allegedly pushing Kiev towards such a decision. The president went on to say that he was “surprised” by such sentiments.

Earlier on Saturday, NBC reported that Western officials were holding behind-the-scenes talks with Kiev about the possibility of negotiating with Russia and were even exploring potential concessions Ukraine might agree to in order to end the conflict.

The report also said that the Western nations were concerned about a potential “stalemate”in the conflict and Ukraine “running out of forces” in the future.

Russia has repeatedly signaled its readiness to engage in negotiations with Kiev but has insisted that such talks should take Moscow’s security interests and the “reality on the ground” into account. In autumn 2022, four former Ukrainian territories, including the two Donbass republics, officially joined Russia following a series of referendums. Kiev never accepted their results, branding the votes a “sham” and seeking to restore its control over the four territories, as well as Crimea, which joined Russia in 2014 following another referendum.

In October 2022, Zelensky also signed a decree banning Ukraine from holding any talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

This past September, Putin said that if Kiev is willing to end the conflict it should demonstrate its intentions publicly, including by revoking the 2022 decree. “If their wish to achieve something through negotiations is genuine, let them do that,” he said at that time. “Let the Ukrainians themselves say it… announce it publicly,” the Russian president added.

Ex-Wagner fighters re-join Russian forces in Donbass(PHOTOS)

A new unit formed from former PMC members is now training in the region as part of the ‘Akhmat’ Special Forces

Former fighters of the Wagner private military company (PMC) have officially joined the Russian Armed Forces and formed a unit to re-join the fight in the Donbass, the new force’s commander told the Russian media this week. Dubbed ‘Kamerton’ (‘tuning-fork’) and formed using the ex-mercenaries, it is now a part of an elite Chechen ‘Akhmat’ Special Forces group that has been engaged in Moscow’s conflict with Kiev almost since the beginning.

Videos of the former Wagner fighters undergoing combat training at a base in the Donbass have surfaced online and been seen by RT. Footage shows the unit members operating reconnaissance and combat drones, as well as storming simulated enemy defensive positions and trenches and using artillery, mortars, and heavy armor in simulated combat.

The unit’s commander said that the fighters are determined to “continue their work”regardless of whether they fight as part of the Wanger PMC or the regular forces. The Akhmat Special Forces detachment is a part of the Russian National Guard – an internal military force reporting directly to the president and the head of the national security council.

“We have a contract with the motherland,” the unit commander, whose identity was not publicly revealed, said while commenting on its present status. The man also said that his formation had reached an “absolute understanding” with the Akhmat commander, Apti Alautdinov, and was largely allowed to “preserve” its “methods” and combat tactics as well as internal structure. The Russian military has also fully supplied his men, he added.

The size of the new unit is unclear. According to its officers, the force includes company-level tactical groups. The Russian media reported that its armored and artillery components were fully manned with the former Wagner fighters. The assault teams have received reinforcements in addition to the former Wagner PMC members, who account for around 60% of the teams’ personnel.

The new unit has not been deployed to the frontlines yet.
