Drivers

November 12, 2012, 12:30 PM

Drivers see speed cameras and adjust their habits. They are much less aware of the law, which The Capital has surely publicized; these enforcers are merciless, but only if you exceed the speed limit by 12 mph or more. A speed camera is not a stop sign, nor reason to slam your brakes and proceed unnaturally at 12 below the limit.

But cameras do funny things to people. What we wish to get away with if only no one else ever knows. A guilty conscience is a mighty force; one can drive us to quite strange and otherwise inexplicable behavior. It's a rare find, those secure in themselves living and dying at speed limit plus 10. Which is the more dangerous deviance?
