also : you had to participate in the 401K because even though they WERE going to lay you off before it ever vested, if you didn't they wouldn't be able to put money into that pot for themselves, and thus they didn't want you because they needed dupes who would so that after they fired them (laid them off) the 'match' would go to management.
or the companies pre IPO that said stuff like 'every engineer in a seat increases our strike price by 2 million dollars.'
