Angela Merkel's Interior Minister Horst Seehofer announces plans to resign in asylum row

The row in the German coalition government over asylum policy reignited on Sunday as Interior Minister Horst Seehofer announced plans to resign over Angela Merkel's asylum policy. Merkel is facing a new crisis.

German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer dramatically resigned from his posts as Interior Minister and CSU leader on Sunday evening after saying Chancellor Angela Merkel's European Union asylum deal did not "have the same effect" as the national measures for which he has been pushing.

According to reports from sources within the Christian Social Union (CSU), the Bavarian sister party to Merkel's center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), party leader and immigration hard-liner Seehofer said that his crunch meeting with the chancellor on Saturday evening had "not had any effect" on their conflict.

This was a direct contradiction of Merkel's account of the meeting, which she delivered in an interview with public broadcaster ZDF on Sunday. "The sum of everything we have decided has the same effect [as national measures]," she said. "That is my personal conclusion. Of course the CSU will have to decide that for itself."
