Ever tried a pipe? It would be tough for you to not inhale (most pipe smokers do not inhale), but it doesn't have all the additives. It is an art to keep the thing lit - I'm still learning - because the additives aren't in there to give it an easy burn.
It is absorbed by the mouth, but to a lesser extent.
Fun fact - the 1964 surgeon general report on smoking that ruined it for everyone actually found that pipe smokers lived longer than non smokers. No one talks about that…
