"The Tuesday arrest of Giulio Occhionero and his sister, Francesca Maria, has brought to light what appears to be the biggest, and highest-profile, hacking of institutional and corporate accounts ever reported in Italy.

The siblings have been planting the Pyramid Eye remote access Trojan on computers using a spear-phishing technique over several years, according to the arrest order.

They attacked at least 18,000 high-profile targets, including former Prime Ministers Matteo Renzi and Mario Monti, President of European Central Bank Mario Draghi, as well as employees and heads of various ministries including Internal Affairs, Treasury, Finance and Education.

Also attacked were members of the Parliament and the Bank of Italy, Vatican Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi and several members of the Freemasons, an organization where Giulio Occhionero belonged as grand master in a Roman chapter. At least 1,700 of the attacks appear to have been successful."

"ROME (Reuters) - Police arrested two people on Saturday who have worked at Leonardo for their alleged role in hacking the Italian defence group’s computers to steal sensitive information between 2015 and 2017, prosecutors in the southern city of Naples said.

The detentions are a blow for Leonardo which, along with its aerospace activities, also has a large cybersecurity division that counts NATO among its customers.

Leonardo said in a statement it was the injured party and that the company itself had first reported the hacking. It said it would continue to cooperate fully with the police.

Naples prosecutors said a former employee in Leonardo’s cybersecurity department was suspected of having used malware to infect 94 computers to extract “classified information of significant value to the company”.

The information was stolen for “illicit goals which are still being investigated”, they said in a statement, adding that the person in question had been detained by police."

"Leonardo SpA employee Arturo D’Elia was arrested on December 5, 2020, accused of infecting his company’s computer system with programs allowing confidential information to be exfiltrated – or exported – to outside computers.

Ninety-four workstations were affected by the malware program, authorities say. The hacking took place over the course of two years from 2015 to 2017 and authorities allege 10 gigabytes worth of data – the equivalent of about 100,000 files – were illegally transferred.

(You can find the original announcement by Italian authorities here and a translated version here.)

The files related to “design of components for civil aircraft and military aircraft for the domestic and international market as well as access credentials and other personal information of Leonardo employees,” authorities say.

Another man, an employee of another company but working as a contractor for Leonardo, was also arrested at the time. That man is identified as Antonio Rossi.

The timing of the arrests is notable as it was just four days after a story appeared in major Italian news publication La Verita that outlined allegations of interference in the Nov. 3 U.S. [election]"

Correct, right after the stolen election.

After a brief window of reports like this getting out, it quickly became almost a crime to speak of or look into election malfeasance. Relevant today re: Trumps cases
