Baptism is kind of a weird thing because John the Baptist baptized adults who made a conscious decision to be baptized. The Baptists still do the full immersion baptism where the person being baptized has made the choice and the decision to be baptized. I think at birth, the baby's parent's can have a dedication ceremony where they promise to raise the child as a Christian. I am not a Baptist so I'm not exactly sure about this.
The Catholics have what they call a Christening, and then later on have 1st Communion, which to me is similar to the Baptists doing their baptisms. I'm not a Catholic either, I'm just going by what my Catholic friends have told me.
I guess the whole idea of an infant being Christened is sort of supposed to take the place of the Jewish tradition of circumcision of male babies on the 8th day.
Neither Baptism, nor Christening, nor Circumcision is what saves a person though. They are just signs of intentions and promises, as far as my understand goes.
