It’s a federal highway on state right of way. The poor guy who was leasing the land under the structure where the hobo fire started is probably going to become the target of blame. Maybe the state will have second thoughts about all the camps and leases they allow under and around critical facilities and infrastructure. The encampments are a widespread fixture in transportation corridors out west.

The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, also known as the “Bipartisan Infrastructure Law,” is the largest long-term investment in our infrastructure and economy in our nation’s history. It provides $550 billion over fiscal years 2022-2026 in new federal investment in roads, bridges, and mass transit, water infrastructure, resilience, and broadband.

There was intense heat which likely compromised the structural integrity of the bridge. The freeway handles 300,000 trips per day. Loss of compressive strength of the piers supporting the bridge means there is a possibility the structure could have a catastrophic failure.

Abstract

This research examines the effects of increased temperatures on the characteristics of concrete. Concrete-based constructions are typically particularly efficient in high temperatures or fire. However, because concrete is a complex substance, it changes dramatically when exposed to higher temperatures. The primary impacts of fire on concrete are loss of compressive strength and explosive spalling, which can be defined as the forceful removal of material from the concrete's surface. Although significant information has been gathered in both circumstances, more systematic research on the consequences of temperature exposure is still required. The modelling of thermomechanical phenomena has advanced. In addition, current models for mechanical and thermal properties are peer reviewed. Peer review is done for an existing model for mechanical and thermal properties for unconfined concrete.
