It’s hard to say how serious Reagan was when he asked Gorbachev if the Soviets would help fight off an alien invasion, but he was far from the first government official to mull over out-of-this-world fighting tactics. During the 1950s and ‘60s, a group of U.S. Army engineers was tasked with thinking up theoretical weapons that could be used to defend non-existent lunar bases. And recently, Anatoly Zak reports for Popular Mechanics, the Russian government revealed that in the 1970s, the Soviet Almaz space station was not only armed with a top-secret space cannon, but it was also test-fired.

“The word ‘disaster’ literally means the loss of a star, or the loss of your guiding light. Whether the disaster is large or small, intimate or collective, you don’t see it coming. It is, by definition, a shock, a surprise. The disasters knocks you off your axis, jolts you out of your normal orbit (Clark, 2005).
No matter the size of an accident or disaster, it surely feels like a catastrophe to the individuals affected. But catastrophe, as used by the Center for Disaster Philanthropy, references a specific type of disaster – one that is extremely large and is outside the coping ability of a community. The same hazard (fire, for example) could be an accident, disaster or catastrophe depending upon scale of impact. A single-family house fire is an accident or emergency; a fire that consumes a few city blocks is a disaster; and a wildfire that demolishes several communities, requiring mass evacuation and reconstruction is a catastrophe.

The periodicity and recurrence of eclipses is governed by the Saros cycle, a period of approximately 6,585.3 days (18 years 11 days 8 hours). It was known to the Chaldeans as a period when lunar eclipses seem to repeat themselves, but the cycle is applicable to solar eclipses as well.
The Saros arises from a natural harmony between three of the Moon's orbital periods (circa 2000 CE):
Synodic Month (New Moon to New Moon) = 29.530589 days = 29d 12h 44m 03s
Anomalistic Month (perigee to perigee) = 27.554550 days = 27d 13h 18m 33s
Draconic Month (node to node) = 27.212221 days = 27d 05h 05m 36s
One Saros is equal to 223 synodic months. However, 239 anomalistic months and 242 draconic months are also equal to this same period (to within a couple hours)!
223 Synodic Months = 6585.3223 days = 6585d 07h 43m
239 Anomalistic Months = 6585.5375 days = 6585d 12h 54m
242 Draconic Months = 6585.3575 days = 6585d 08h 35m
