Today, we remember the great David Akeman aka Stringbean. String was a legendary performer on the Grand Ole Opry and Hee Haw. String and his wife Estelle were murdered 50 years ago today (11-10-73) at their home North of Nashville, Tn. String had a direct tie in with Jackie Gleason. He borrowed his line “How sweet it is” quite frequently. The Akeman’s deaths forever changed the innocence of country music. The last song String would sing at the Opry before his death was “Lord I’m Coming Home “.
