EXCLUSIVE: Rep. Anna Paulina Luna Introduces Legislation To Protect Americans’ Personal Data From Foreign Adversaries

November 14, 2023 12:11 PM ET

Republican Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna introduced legislation Tuesday to protect Americans from foreign adversaries accessing and/or exploiting their personal data.

The Daily Caller first obtained a copy of the legislation, entitled the U.S. Data on U.S. Soil Act. The bill would specifically prohibit covered entities such as TikTok, Facebook and Instagram from storing any U.S. national’s data in a physical data center located within a foreign adversary, such as China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea or Russia.

The bill would also prohibit government officials in foreign adversary countries from accessing the covered data.

Furthermore, the bill would enforce a large fine if these regulations are violated according to “unfair or deceptive acts” under the Federal Trade Commission Act. Anyone who violates the regulations would be forced to pay a fine of $50,120 per violation.

“Americans daily face the threat of exposing their personal data to bad-actor countries who are looking for a chance to exploit us, simply by opening our phones,” Luna told the Caller before introducing the legislation. “The protections in my bill are long overdue. A military leader would never hand over his tactics and intelligence to the enemy on a silver platter, and neither should we.”

Republican Reps. Mary Miller of Illinois, George Santos of New York and Ralph Norman of South Carolina joined Luna as co-sponsors.

EXCLUSIVE: Rep. Anna Paulina Luna Introduces Legislation To Terminate Overreach At CDC

November 08, 2023 4:08 PM ET

Republican Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna introduced legislation Wednesday that aims to prevent the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from returning to its heavy handed COVID-era policies during future pandemics.

The Daily Caller first obtained a copy of the legislation, which is titled the Terminate CDC Overreach Act. The bill would amend existing law to ensure that the communicable and pre-communicable framework is limited to people who are proven to be infected or shown to be very likely infected through clinical tests, contact tracing and clinical presentation.

It would also require the CDC to “show the science” by updating science briefs regularly and publishing them with each recommendation, guidance or policy that the agency used. The bill would also include an expedited consideration of a joint resolution of disapproval for the CDC’s emergency measures, giving Congress the power over CDC decisions that have significant impact on the economy.

“The economic and social upheaval the CDC caused by abusing their authority is nothing short of unprecedented. One too many American families know the personal harm this has caused to their children, jobs, and pocketbooks. It’s high time we check the CDC’s power so that it is NEVER allowed to exploit a crisis like this again,” Luna told the Caller before introducing the bill.

The legislation was cosponsored by Republican Reps. Mary Miller of Illinois and Eli Crane of Arizona.
