Thank the D's and ChYnA for ALL overdoses.

This is their War.

Dex Carvey, son of comedian Dana Carvey, dies at 32 of accidental overdose

Dana Carvey's oldest son, Dex Carvey, has died, the "Saturday Night Live" alumnus shared on Instagram.

“Last night we suffered a terrible tragedy. Our beloved son, Dex, died of an accidental drug overdose. He was 32 years old,” Dana Carvey wrote in a joint statement with wife Paula Zwagerman on Thursday. “Dex packed a lot into those 32 years. He was extremely talented at so many things — music, art, film making, comedy — and pursued all of them passionately.”

According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, Dex died Wednesday at his home.

He followed in his father's footsteps as a comedian and opened for his dad's 2016 Netflix standup special, "Dana Carvey: Straight White Male, 60." Younger brother Thomas Carvey is also credited as a warmup comedian in the special. According to his Instagram bio, he co-founded the Third Wheel Comedy Club in Los Angeles.

"It's not an exaggeration to say that Dex loved life. And when you were with him, you loved life too. He made everything fun. But most of all, he loved his family, his friends and his girlfriend, Kaylee," Carvey and Zwagerman's statement reads. "Dex was a beautiful person. His handmade birthday cards are a treasure. We will miss him forever."

They added, "To anyone struggling with addiction of who loves someone struggling with addiction, you are in our hearts and prayers."

Yet another former Silicon Valley darling is convicted of investor fraud

This year will be remembered for a lot of things. Among them could be the growing number of stars in the startup world who were later convicted for defrauding investors.

Roughly six months after Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes headed to jail for four counts of wire fraud, and just two weeks after Sam Bankman-Fried was found guilty on seven counts of fraud and conspiracy for his role in the collapse of his crypto exchange, another former high-flier in the startup world,Mike Rothenberg, was today convicted on 21 counts, including bank fraud, false statements, four counts of money laundering, and 15 counts of wire fraud.

The verdict, delivered by a jury in Northern California, bookends a 10-year-long journey for Rothenberg, who burst onto the Bay Area scene in 2013 at age 27 with a $5 million fund and enough charm to persuade TechCrunch that his one-man firm was special enough to merit coverage.

The Austin native was a compelling subject. A self-described former math Olympian who attended Stanford before getting an MBA from Harvard Business School, Rothenberg reportedly started both a tutoring business and a real estate fund while still an undergrad. He also logged time at Bain & Co., seemingly setting himself up for a traditional career in finance or venture capital. Instead of trodding that well-worn path he was reportedly offered at least one role at a hedge fund Rothenberg earned kudos for striking out on his own instead, and he leaned heavily into a narrative about himself as a relentless hustler who could relate to the founders he wanted to fund.

Rothenberg also found increasingly inventive ways to attract widespread attention to his relatively small shop, many of them centered on organizing expensive parties for founders. Indeed, one of these gatherings – an “annual” event held two years in a row at the ballpark where the San Francisco Giants play – inspired an episode of the HBO show “Silicon Valley.”

It also raised questions, including in a story by Bloomberg that dubbed him “the Valley's party animal" while also observing that it wasn't "entirely clear" how Rothenberg was funding it all. (TechCrunch was later told by sources that after the Bloomberg piece was published, Rothenberg sent two employees to SFO, purchasing them airline tickets so they could buy up its newsstand copies and keep them out of view.)

He never recovered. In 2018, he was formerly charged by the SEC for overcharging investors to fund personal projects; Rothenberg settled in 2019 with the agency, which sought tens of millions of dollars in disgorgement penalties (these were later backed up by a federal court ruling).

While still facing that mountain of civil penalties, Rothenberg was charged with fraud six months later by the DOJ, which would later lead to today's outcome.

What comes next could be worse. While Rothenberg won't be sentenced until March 1 of next year, in its 2019 press release about its action against Rothenberg, the DOJ noted that each of its wire fraud charges carries "maximum statutory penalties of up to 20 years in prison, not more than three years supervised release, and a $250,000 fine." It added that "two bank fraud charges" and "two false statement to a bank charges each carry a maximum of 30 years in prison, not more than five years supervised release, and a $1,000,000 fine." The money laundering charges, it continued, "carry a penalty of imprisonment of not more than ten years, not more than three years of supervised release, and a fine of not more than twice the amount of the criminally derived property involved in the transaction at issue."

Thinking the mRNA shots were being given out, long before "covid" via "flu" shots (and other various vaccinations), but just a hunch.

Messenger RNA, or mRNA, wasdiscovered in the early 1960s; research into how mRNA could be delivered into cells was developed in the 1970s.So, why did it take until the global COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 for the first mRNA vaccine to be brought to market?

THERE’S A BIG GAP BETWEEN WHEN THE FIRST MRNA FLU VACCINE WAS TESTED IN MICE IN THE 1990S AND WHEN THE FIRST MRNA VACCINES FOR RABIES WERE TESTED IN HUMANS IN 2013. WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN THE INTERIM?

The early years of mRNA research were marked by a lot of enthusiasm for the technology but some difficult technical challenges that took a great deal of innovation to overcome.

The biggest challenge was that mRNA would be taken up by the body and quickly degraded before it could “deliver” its message—the RNA transcript—and be read into proteins in the cells.

The solution to this problem came from advances in nanotechnology: the development of fatty droplets (lipid nanoparticles) that wrapped the mRNA like a bubble, which allowed entry into the cells. Once inside the cell, the mRNA message could be translated into proteins, like the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, and the immune system would then be primed to recognize the foreign protein.

SO, WHAT HAPPENED ONCE THEY FIGURED OUT THIS TECHNOLOGY?

The first mRNA vaccines using these fatty envelopes were developed against the deadly Ebola virus, but since that virus is only found in a limited number of African countries, it had no commercial development in the U.S.

THEN COVID-19 HIT … WHAT HAPPENED THEN?

Remember, the COVID-19 pandemic spurred manufacturers to develop dozens of potential vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 and brought tremendous increases in funding. Some of those vaccines used traditional methods involving adenovirus as the spike protein delivery system—such as the Johnson & Johnson vector vaccine.

Thanks to decades of research and innovation, mRNA vaccine technology was ready. With COVID, this technology got its moment and has proven to be extremely safe and effective. Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine is the first mRNA product to achieve full FDA approval in the U.S.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Already, vaccine manufacturers are developing mRNA vaccines to protect against other respiratory viruses such as the flu. Moderna is exploring applications of the technology to protect against HIV. It’s a new era for vaccine technology and production, and a testament to scientific progress and decades of research

'Staggering' rise in measles cases last year, says WHO and CDC

LONDON (Reuters) - There was a “staggering” annual rise in measles cases and deaths in 2022, according to a new report from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Cases jumped by 18% to an estimated 9 million, and deaths to 136,000, mostly among children, the health agencies said in a joint statement on Thursday.

There were large or disruptive outbreaks in 37 countries last year, the majority in Africa, compared to 22 in 2021.

“The increase in measles outbreaks and deaths is staggering, but unfortunately, not unexpected given the declining vaccination rates we’ve seen in the past few years,” said John Vertefeuille, director of the CDC’s global immunisation division.

The COVID-19 pandemic massively disrupted routine immunization efforts worldwide, and the bounce back has been slow.

Measles is one of the most contagious viruses in the world but is preventable by two doses of vaccine. However, 22 million children worldwide missed their first dose in 2022 and an additional 11 million their second dose, a slight improvement on the previous year.

However, the situation has not recovered at all since the pandemic in low-income countries, where the risk of dying of measles is highest, said the WHO. Coverage rates there are at 66% on average, compared to the 95% the U.N. agency says is needed to prevent outbreaks.

That is an "alarm bell for action" for countries and all global health stakeholders, said the WHO's director of immunization, Kate O'Brien.

>What did they do with the homeless people?

San Francisco is suspending access to one of its only walk-in homeless shelters during the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conferenceto prioritize beds for unhoused people living near the vicinity of the event, a source told KQED.

The move sheds light on some of the city’s opaque plans for how it is preparing to keep streets clear and counteract doom-loop narratives about crime and homelessness in the city ahead of the major event when President Biden and more than a dozen other heads of state, CEOs and journalists from around the globe will descend on San Francisco.

During the event, theSanta Maria y Marta shelter, located at 1050 S. Van Ness Ave., will reserve its 56 beds for people who typically camp in the APEC high-security zones, according to Jennifer Friedenbach, executive director for the Coalition on Homelessness.

Officials at HSH did respond to requests for comment about its plans for the shelter. However, the city has been open about the fact that it is working aggressively to manicure and prepare for the event.

“When our community hosts events, like APEC, we want to put our best foot forward,” said Emily Cohen, deputy director of communications and legislative affairs for the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing, in an email to KQED Monday. “Dedicated outreach interventions will be focused on the conference vicinity and offering safe places for people experiencing homelessness will be a priority.”

He also wants to invoke the insurrection act which would allow him to use US military force against American civilians at home.
