Javier Milei, a libertarian member of Argentina's Congress, will be the country's next president after rival candidate Sergio Massa conceded in the runoff Sunday.

Why it matters: The crumbling economy has helped propel the far-right economist who's been compared to former President Trump, per Noticias Telemundo's Marina E. Franco, writing for Axios.

Some 40% of the population lives in poverty, inflation is in the triple digits and GDP has been shrinking.

By the numbers: Official results showed La Libertad Avanz candidate won nearly 56% of the vote, while Peronist Economy Minister Massa won just over 44%.

Of note: Trump congratulated Milei on his Truth Social platform on Sunday night, saying: "The whole world was watching! I am very proud of you. You will turn your Country around andtruly Make Argentina Great Again!"
