Being part of an organized effort to increase the complexity of the galaxy requires much effort, travel, observing and tending. You could say I am a 'Complexity Farmer'. The 'harvest' is itself provides the continued existence of our shared galaxy.

 

Through my job description below, we will answer many questions.

 

What do we do?

 

The first step is identifying planets in the galaxy that have reached a maximum physical complexity of life forms. As you could imagine, there is quite a bit of travel required. But, past labors have given us a set of geometry rules that increases the probability of locating a fertile world. Not perfect, but it is much more efficient.

 

Once we have located a planet we apply the same rules to locate the life forms that exhibit the greatest biological complexity.

 

For each of the life forms, those with the most complex biological aspects, are identified. In most cases, the circulatory system provides a greater flow to this area. Makes identification easier and happens to be where the magic of our skill set resides.

 

A small group, 25% +- under goes slight modification of the circulatory system to this area. Normally, the greatest flow begins on one side and gradually is reduced as it moves to the opposite side of this area. This is a natural expression.

 

The modification itself creates an additional circulatory route to the opposite side of the complex area. An additional route of equal flow rate.

 

The purpose of the modification is to increase the use of functions that are weakly supplied by the circulatory system. In addition, it increases the probabilities in favor of the life form surviving and evolving at an increased rate. As well as in a more complex manner.

 

This wraps up the preparing the soil and planting the seed part of our job. Next we will discuss the 'Tending' aspect of our work.

 

Now that useful circulatory flow is available. The area that has been modified needs an opportunity(s) to function. This is where we spend most of our time.

 

We provide the opportunities to the life form in a gradual series of challenges. Challenges that over time engage deeper functions in these areas. There are two reasons for this.

 

First, to generate the smaller branches of the circulatory pathways.

 

Second, to guide the life form into taking on the responsibility of challenging itself. This being the crucial moment. And the primary indicator of how well we are doing our job at presenting the proper gradient of challenges.

 

The challenges initially take the form of natural occurrences. Strategic of course. Ample time is allowed for the new circulatory pathways to form before presenting the next more difficult challenge. Often, numerous challenges of equal difficulty are required to initiate the branch formation. As progress is made through the gradient challenges, the number of repeats lowers. This indicates the increasing initiative of the life form.

 

In this way we tend to many planets. On a periodic schedule, determined by where a life form is on the gradient. We check the progress of the life forms and make adjustments as needed.

 

The fruit is ripe:

 

The greatest reward in our work is when a life form creates its first challenge for its own growth. It has taken responsibility for its part in making the galaxy and the universe as a whole, more complex.

 

The harvest:

 

From this point, the time between periodic checks will continue to increase. There are many checks we perform that began long before myself and my co-workers came into existence. These are the echoes of our ancestors efforts. There is great joy in ensuring that their great work continues.

Side note: this story came to mind in trying to understand the role of the black 'Monolith' in the film '2001: A Space Odyssey'.
