I remember Dizzy the street preacher in Mesa, Az. He rode (danced?) around on a bicycle on the streets and pointed up to Heaven and pretended to be on a cellphone while pointing up into the sky. Then he would park his bike on a street corner and start preaching to cars going by.

One day I decided to sit with him and hear what he had to say.

He preached about the Kingdom of God coming and called illegal aliens "heathens".

I played didjeridoo with him as I listened to people driving by telling us to "Fuck Off!"

I didn't realize that we could have been killed.

Never entered my head.

When you saw him, you just thought he was a crazy homeless guy; but once you actually sat down and talked to him, you saw that he was pretty much a normal guyโ€ฆhe just enjoyed making a spectacle of himself in the name of the Lord.

I found this pic of him.

Robert "Dizzy" Disbrow was a street preacher and a local fixture in downtown Mesa for many years until his death in 2010.

When he was younger, he would ride his bike down Main street - no hands - striking wild dance poses and loudly preaching to the passing drivers every day.

Later on, he'd stand by a busy street corner pretending to cast a fishing line across the intersection. He'd slowly reel it in, occasionally yelling stuff like "FISHER OF MEN!", "PRAISE JEEEE-ZUS", and "GET OUTTA HERE SATAN!"

I remember being a little scared of him when I was a kid, but as I grew older, I looked forward to seeing him and would wave whenever we drove by.

I think of him every time I drive through downtown Mesa now. He was a memorable part of growing up in the east valley.

Wow!

Found a vid of him on YT!

I think I sat with him before YT was a thang.

It must've been in the late 90's or early 2000's.

RIP DIzzy! God bless you, Brother!
