Firefighters battle blaze at Tesla Science Center in Shoreham
Dozens of firefighters across multiple departments worked late Tuesday to put out a fire at the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe, the site of famed scientist Nikola Tesla's final laboratory in Shoreham.
Suffolk police confirmed the fire was reported at 4:49 p.m. at Tesla and Robinson streets.
Firefighters were spotted on site an hour later, battling the blaze as flames leapt out of the northeast portion of the lab, just below the prominent peak of the century-old building. The cause of the fire was not immediately known, officials with the nonprofit that owns the site said Tuesday evening.
As of about 8 p.m., the fire continued to burn as firefighters worked to extinguish it on a cold, rainy night. The laboratory's roof appeared to be destroyed from flames that burned through it.
