December 2, 1804: Napoleon Bonaparte crowned himself Emperor of France in a grand ceremony at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. Napoleon placed the crown on his own head, rather than being crowned by Pope Pius VII, who was present. He also crowned his wife, Josephine, as Empress. This ceremony ended the French Republic and began Napoleon’s reign as emperor, the start of a new era in France.
