Growing Proportion Of Canadians Want Trudeau To Step Down

Over seven in ten (72%, +12) Canadians now think it is time for the Liberals to elect a new leader to lead them into the next election.

With Liberal polling numbers in free fall, it appears that Canadians increasingly want Justin Trudeauโ€™s tenure as Liberal Party Leader and Prime Minister to end. Nearly three quarters (72%) of Canadians now think Trudeau should step down, up from 60% in September. Within his own party, support for the current leader and Prime Minister is also flagging. One third (33%) of what Liberal voters remain want Trudeau to step down, which is up from 28% in September. Meanwhile, the other federal leaders maintain support from the general public and even more from their own parties. In fact, 91% of Conservative voters want Pierre Poilievre to lead the party into the next election, and 78% of NDP supporters are keen to be led by Jagmeet Singh.

Chrystia Freeland has the most name recognition, and the greatest potential to improve Liberal fortunes at the ballot box. Freeland has the highest support from Liberal voters (63%) but doesnโ€™t make as much headway with NDP (29%) or Green Party (26%) voters. None of the potential Liberal leader replacements hold sway with Conservative voters, around one in ten Conservative voters likely to consider voting for each of the Liberal leader replacements.
