‘Marc Dutroux is in a way a Shakespearean character’

vr 01 sep 2017

I’ve met with Swiss director and future head of NTGent Milo Rau (40) on a sultry summer evening. I encountered him at the cafe terrace in the company of the other two boyband members, Steven Heene and Stefan Bläske. After some refreshing drinks and chit-chat together, I take Milo to a quiet spot in the open air and I gently shoot my questions.

Five Easy Pieces has been selected for the TheaterFestival. The show has already been awarded several times, including the 3sat-Preis at the Theatertreffen in Berlin. Why do you think this production is so successful?

I believe there are several reasons but I guess the main reason is the fact that it is really touching. For myself, for people who are not trained in theatre, but as well for sophisticated theater critics. They will be touched and shocked as well. It is a very curious case because it stages one of the last taboos existing: pedophilia. I remember a critic from Berlin saying: ‘it is really interesting how the story is told in so many different ways. First of all associatively but simultaneously it goes very straight to the core of the topic’. I think this is the reason why it works from here to even Singapore. Everybody can understand it, just like a fairy tale. Because the play has the same directness and at the same time, on a meta level, it talks about voyeurism, violence, the meaning of theater and the relation between the director and the actor. For me personally it was also an essay or summarization of the work I did over the past years.

Do you think the impact of the show will be different for Belgian audience members from the international audience members?

Of course. Belgian spectators know these tragic events took place not that long ago. The young actors for example grew up with it and as a result know a lot about it. But for them it is more like an old tale from ancient times. You can compare it to reading Richard III or the brothers Grimm.

The age of the children in the show range from 8-13 years old and is similar to the one of the Dutroux’ victims. An age that balances on the verge of childhood and puberty/adulthood. Would it have made a significant difference if the actors were either younger or older?

It’s difficult to say. Currently, we are rehearsing with a new cast because the international touring is getting too much for the original cast. We are also rewriting a bit of their personal stories as some of the new actors have a different cultural background. One of the new girls for example is of East-Asian origin. Some of the children are also becoming too old and then the difference between adult and child starts to disappear. Besides, in this case the play might have been less of a fairy tale and perhaps more brutal and sadistic. On the other hand, when the actors are too young they do not understand what they are doing. Actually, the production was an exercise for me as well. As a director I had to train these children how to act, to be present and to listen on stage. It is very different from working with professional actors. They just act out my directions and then the existential question is not present. Five Easy Pieces is in that sense a classical Lehrstück. A play where the actors learn from being on stage. The five pieces are five different theater schools. The first for example is mimicry and method acting. In this part, one of the actors has to play an old man in Robert De Niro-style with a heavy accent.

Are you planning on working with children again in the future?

Yes, I have plans to make a show called La Reprise for the first season at NTGent. It is again centered around a crime against children

I am just a scapegoat, Dutroux tells court

Ambrose Evans-Pritchardin Arlon

Thu 10 Jun 2004 at 23:11

MARC Dutroux, the accused child murderer, launched a final tirade against the Belgian authorities yesterday for mounting an "organised lynching", claiming that he is the scapegoat for a powerful child prostitution "mafia" protected by the state.

Delivering a three-hour final plea in Belgium's trial of the century, the former car thief and handyman denied murdering four young girls and a male accomplice in a spree of kidnapping, rape, and killing that rocked Belgium in the mid-1990s.

All five bodies were found buried on Dutroux properties after his arrest.

"I feel responsible for the deaths of An and Eefje but I did not murder them," Dutroux said. "I am not a murderer. The true assassins are at liberty. They have escaped justice because it serves the interests of organised corruption," he said, admitting only that he played a role in abducting or hiding girls.

Dutroux's speech was his last chance to name the alleged masterminds of the child prostitution ring. But he offered no fresh details shedding light on this alleged network.

Speaking with his usual pedantic self-confidence, he said his only fault in the death of eight-year old Julie Lejeune and Melissa Russo was to "abandon them to the conscience of my wife", Michelle Martin. He implored her to "tell the truth" of what really happened for the sake of the parents. He said his ex-wife "was at fault" for the death of the two 8-year-olds while he was behind bars for car theft.

"He is trying to mix fact with fiction," Martin's lawyer, Sarah Pollet, told VRT television outside the courthouse. "He is trying to accuse others for things he is responsible for."

Dutroux said the investigation that led to the trial was riddled with holes and that investigators did not follow up on any clues that might not have led to him.

"That would only have destroyed the theory of a single perpetrator," he said.

He listed several file numbers to the court, pleading for police to follow up on clues that he said would prove his claims that he was just a "small fish" working for a sinister network active in kidnapping girls to be sold into prostitution - a scenario rejected by prosecutors.

Judge Stephane Goux last Monday dismissed his motion asking for additional criminal investigations, saying he saw no grounds for reopening the files.

Dutroux maintained he was just a "marionette puppet in a show trial," taking the fall for the crime ring, which he blames for the murder of Marchal and Lambrecks.

"The murderer of An and Eefje is still free," he said.

Dutroux also lashed out against psychiatric experts who testified he was a psychopath and a narcissistic manipulator who knew exactly what he was doing. One of the experts likened Dutroux's character to Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann, who helped organise the extermination of Jews during World War II.

"Eichmann was a sadist, but I never did anything to the girls," Dutroux said.

Lawyers for the families of the victims denounced Dutroux's speech, as did his ex-wife and another co-defendant, Michel Nihoul, both of whom are alleged to have been involved in the kidnappings.

The verdict is expected next week.

Paedophile's accomplice and former wife released from prison early

This article is more than 11 years old

Belgium's highest court grants parole to Michelle Martin on condition that she goes into Ardennes convent

Ian Traynor Brussels

Tue 28 Aug 2012 19.33 BST

The accomplice and former wife of a Belgian paedophile and murderer has been allowedto go free after serving half her sentence for involvement inchild abductions, rapes and murdersthat plunged the national judicial system into crisis.

Michelle Martin, the former wife of Marc Dutroux, who received a 30-year sentence for aiding and abetting his kidnapping and molestation of six girls aged eight to 19 in the 1990s, wasgranted parole at the fourth attempt after serving 16 years in jail.

Four of the girls were murdered. Martin became the target of particular national anger because she allowed two of the girls to starve to death in her care while Dutroux was temporarily in prison.

The ruling on Tuesday by Belgium's highest court followed three previous failed attempts to win parole.

A court in the southern town of Mons ruled last month that she could go free on condition that she went into an Ardennes convent for 10 years. Relatives of Dutroux's victims were outraged and mounted appeals that were overruled on Tuesday.

The Clarisse convent in Malonne in the hill country 50 miles south of Brussels delivered an anguished statement describing the difficulties experienced in deciding whether to offer a haven.

"We were shocked by the terrible suffering of the victims and their families, who have gone through hell," said the convent's Mother Superior. "Martin is a human being capable, like all of us, of the worst and the best."

The successful parole hearings have reopened the wounds in Belgium inflicted by the Dutroux atrocities and the litany of judicial blundering, negligence and alleged connivance and corruption that the case exposed.

The victims' families argue that Martin has never shown real remorse for the crimes, which entailed kidnapping children, keeping them imprisoned in specially built cellars in Dutroux's properties, serial torture, sexual abuse and killing.

Jean-Denis Lejeune, the father of one of the murdered girls, told Le Soir newspaper on Tuesday that he was going to write to Martin at the convent.

"She has said she wants to make amends. I would like her to tell the truth about the circumstances surrounding the death of my daughter and that she stop telling lies."

Judges at the Court of Cassation ruled that there had been nothing improper in the Mons court decision to grant Martin parole and dismissed the objections.

Georges-Henri Beauthier, a lawyer for two of the victims' families, said: "The law needs to be changed. The law needs to be reviewed in favour of respecting and listening to the victims."

Given the strength of feeling generated by the case, Martin will need to be afforded special police protection. Le Soir calculated that this will cost the Belgian taxpayer €120,000 a month.
