Jan 05, 2017

By HLS News Staff

On Jan. 4 the Harvard Law Review published The President’s Role in Advancing Criminal Justice Reform, an article by President Barack Obama ’91 who was president of the Law Review during his time as a student at Harvard Law School. Current Law Review President Michael Zuckerman ’17 penned the following reflection for Medium (published on the official White House channel) on the president’s piece — the editorial team’s experience, the honor of publishing the first Law Review article by a sitting president, and his own personal take on law and criminal justice reform.

The White House has issued a statement on Lil Wayne receiving a full pardon from President Donald Trump.

Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. – President Trump granted a full pardon to Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., also known as “Lil Wayne.” Mr. Carter pled guilty to possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon, owing to a conviction over 10 years ago. Brett Berish of Sovereign Brands, who supports a pardon for Mr. Carter, describes him as “trustworthy, kind-hearted and generous.” Mr. Carter has exhibited this generosity through commitment to a variety of charities, including donations to research hospitals and a host of foodbanks. Deion Sanders, who also wrote in support of this pardon, calls Mr. Wayne “a provider for his family, a friend to many, a man of faith, a natural giver to the less fortunate, a waymaker, [and] a game changer.”

Lil Wayne was among the 73 people President Trump pardoned. Trump also commuted the sentences of 70 others.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned Friday, during a meeting of the Security Council (UNSC), that Gaza is at a “breaking point” as a result of Israel’s conflict with Hamas.

He warned that the “total collapse” of the humanitarian support system in the besieged enclave could “be devastating for the entire region.”

Guterres, in a rare move earlier this week, invoked Article 99, which was last used over a century ago and states that the secretary-general may inform the council of any matter he believes “may threaten the maintenance of international peace and security.”

A Security Council vote on a resolution drafted by the United Arab Emirates was delayed several hours until after Antony Blinken meets in Washington with ministers from Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, The Palestinian Authority and Jordan.

The United States told the UNSC Friday that it does not support the demand for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.

António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres (European Portuguese:[ɐˈtɔnjuɣuˈtɛʁɨʃ]; born 30 April 1949) is a Portuguese politician and diplomat. Since 2017, he has served as secretary-general of the United Nations, the ninth person to hold this title. A member of the Portuguese Socialist Party, Guterres served as prime minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002.
