Dr Leah Pisar chairs the Aladdin Project, which combats extremism by teaching the universal lessons of the Holocaust and building bridges of knowledge among Jews, Christians, and Muslims. An expert on transatlantic relations, she writes, teaches and is a frequent news commentator. Currently writing a family memoir, she regularly narrates, with her mother, the text written by her late father Samuel Pisar, one of the youngest survivors of Auschwitz, for Leonard Bernstein’s Kaddish Symphony with leading world orchestras. She served on the staff of President Clinton’s National Security Council, at the State Department and at the U.S. Embassy in Paris. She holds a BA from Harvard, a Masters from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques, and a PhD from the University of Paris. Dr Pisar serves on the boards of the Franco-American Fulbright Commission, the French Institute, and the Harriman Foreign Service Fellowship. She was awarded the Global Hope Coalition’s Hero Award in 2019.

One day in October 1986, an American lawyer who had the ear of presidents and corporate moguls was approached at a hotel by a group of Soviet Jews seeking help for members of their community.
The lawyer, a famed Holocaust survivor named Samuel Pisar, spoke Russian, among other languages. He was visiting Moscow with a delegation from the American Jewish Congress. Suddenly, however, he found himself asking a Soviet judge, and later a magistrate, to free five Soviet Jewish men who had been arrested on accusations of disturbing the peace during recent celebrations of the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah. Pisar’s lawyerly efforts worked. The men were soon released to cheers from friends and family, although each was fined 50 rubles.

Samuel Pisar died of pneumonia after a stroke. He is survived by his second wife Judith, their daughter Leah, who worked in the White House for Bill Clinton, and daughters Helaina and Alexandra from his first marriage to Norma Pisar.

Pisar was the longtime lawyer and confidant of Robert Maxwell. Pisar was possibly the last person to speak to Maxwell before he fell to his death from his luxury yacht in November 1991.
Polish-born Pisar was a globally known lawyer based in New York and Paris, a foreign economic policy advisor to president John F Kennedy, the longtime lawyer and confidant of posthumously disgraced publisher Robert Maxwell, a lifelong supporter of human rights and a friend and advisor to French presidents François Mitterrand and Valéry Giscard d’Estaing.
He remained close to US presidents, including Barack Obama, for the rest of his life and represented movie stars including Elizabeth Taylor and corporate executives such as Steve Jobs. He also served as chief counsel to the International Olympic Committee and helped Sydney, Australia, a nation he had come to love, get the 2000 Olympic Games. He was an honorary ambassador for Unesco.
Pisar was one of the last people to speak to Maxwell, by phone, probably an hour before the chairman of Mirror Group Newspapers fell off his luxury yacht the Lady Ghislaine on 5 November, 1991.
Between 1959 and 1965, Pergamon grew from 40 titles to 150. Whereas scientific norms at the time viewed scientific publishing as a public good that should not be subject to profit motives, Maxwell understood that scientific publishing was a market unlike others because there was an almost ceaseless growth of demand, and free labour. Scientists would pressure their institutional libraries to secure access to any serious journal publishing work relevant to their own.

Is It Time to Retire the Term ‘Genocide’?
From Capitol Hill to the Middle East, a word invented to describe the ultimate crime has become a political flashpoint.
When the presidents of Harvard, M.I.T. and the University of Pennsylvania went to Capitol Hill this week to testify about antisemitism on their campuses, they must have expected criticism and confrontation. Even in the worst-case scenario, however, they surely didn’t anticipate that they would emerge as symbols of indifference to genocide. But that has been the effect—thanks in part to their evasive and inhumane responses to questioning, but also in part to the ambiguity that has inhered in the word “genocide” since it was coined some 80 years ago.
At Tuesday’s hearing, Rep. Elise Stefanik, a New York Republican, asked the three college presidents if “calling for the genocide of Jews” would be a violation of their school’s policies. Claudine Gay of Harvard said that such a call “can be” considered harassment, “depending on the context.” Elizabeth Magill of the University of Pennsylvania similarly said that punishing a call for genocide would be “a context-dependent decision.”
